Presenting Your Idea

Guidelines to create a winning pitch

The Pitch

In baseball, a pitch is the act of throwing a baseball toward home plate to start a play.

For engineers, the pitch is like the final inning. It is your chance to communicate your solution to your client and convince them that it solves the problem.

A good pitch is a skill that can be learned!

Presentation Guidelines

Engage Your Audience: start with a question, interesting fact, or memorable story

Explain the problem:

  • Who is the client?
  • Problem statement
  • Problem requirements (you may include those you considered, and final requirements)

Include a detailed description of your solution:

  • Describe the features and characteristics of this solution.
  • Pictures of your prototypes (be sure to place them in the order they were developed).
  • Final solution prototype or drawing, with components labeled.
  • List the function each component serves.
  • Share prototype testing sensor data.

Describe how this solution meets the clients needs:

  • Refer back to clients’ needs and the problem requirements.
  • Explain how this solution addresses the problem.
  • Explain how this solution is better than existing solutions
  • Leave them with a final thought you want them to remember about your solution.

Pitching to Win!

Know your audience - Use language your client will relate to

Optionally - Split up the presentation sections among your group, this will give you more time to practice your pitch.

Summarize slides - Don’t read them word for word!

Be aware of the time (1-3 minutes total).

Project your voice so everyone can hear

Practice, Practice, Practice!
