Registration and Attendance

5

Registration

If your student has never been enrolled at Portland Public Schools (“PPS”), you may register your student and upload all supporting documents online, or you may use the more traditional paper process. If your student has previously been enrolled at PPS, however, you must complete the paper registration process. For comprehensive registration information, along with all the documents and links you need to complete paper and online registration processes, please go to https://www.pps.net/Page/2899.

Both types of registration processes require that the following support documents be provided:

1. Registration form (completed and signed)

2. Proof of age (typically a birth certificate or passport)

3. Two proofs of residence (typically two pieces of mail dated within the last 30 days)

4. Immunization records

5. Vision/dental screens, if the student is age 7 or less.

Students usually begin attending classes 24-48 hours after they are registered.

Please let us know if there is a change in any of your registration information (e.g., emergency contacts, phone numbers, home address). For safety reasons, it is essential that we be able to contact families quickly and reliably.

Withdrawal

To withdraw your student from school, please contact the office at 503-916-6244. You will be asked the last date your student will attend classes, and the name/location of their next school.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend classes every day that school is in session, unless they are ill. We ask that you make every effort to schedule vacations and appointments during non-school periods. If your student must be absent from school, please call the office at 503-916-6244, or email the office staff.

(Do not email astorattend@pps.net; that address is no longer in use.) You will be asked the reason for the absence.

Attendance is taken twice each day for grades K-5, and in every class period for grades 6 - 8.

If a student is absent from school without parental permission, an automated attendance system will call home to inform you of an unexcused absence. To avoid receiving this call, please contact the office before 9:55 AM so we can update the attendance records. If you do receive an automated attendance call, please contact us at 503-916-6244 with the reason for your student’s absence.

Arriving Late

Students may enter the building at 7:53 AM, and classes begin at 8:00 AM. If your student cannot be in the classroom by 8:10 AM, they are considered tardy and must begin their day by checking into the main office. Please direct your late-arriving student to the office; otherwise, they could be marked absent for the day/period, and an automated phone call would be initiated.

Leaving Early

To pick up your student from school early, please come to the office. For safety reasons, office staff will call the classroom and have the student meet you in the office. Parents and emergency contacts identified on the registration form are allowed to pick up students.

You will be required to sign out your student, and may be asked to present identification.

If someone other than an emergency contact will be picking up your student, please let the office know in the morning via phone, email, or written note. Let your pickup person know that their identification will be checked. If there are any concerns or questions about safety, staff will contact the parent prior to releasing the student.

Change of Pickup Plans

Occasionally, a student’s regular afternoon school destination or method of transportation changes. Except for emergency situations, any alternate pickup plans must be made at the start of the school day. A phone call, email, or written note is typically adequate notification to allow a student to obtain a bus pass for the day or to walk home with another student.

Bus Transportation

6

PPS Transportation Office

If you have a bus concern, please contact the Transportation Department at (503) 916-6901.

Bus Schedule

The District’s Transportation Department posts a bus stop and time schedule a the beginning of each school year for all students receiving bus services. Any changes in the schedule after the start of the school year are sent with students on the affected bus and/or mailed to the student’s home. Updated bus route information can be found on the Transportation Department website at: https://www.pps.net/Domain/61

The Astor school office also has schedule information, should you have questions.

Bus Tags

Students in grades Kindergarten through third grades must wear a bus tag for the first three weeks of school. The tag should be attached to the student’s backpack. Bus tags can be obtained in the office. Kindergarten students must be met by an adult or older sibling at their stop.

Hitcher Forms

Students who live out of Astor’s attendance boundary, or students who wish to regularly use a bus stop other than the stop assigned to their home address must complete a Hitcher form each school year. Copies of the form are available on the Transportation website: https://www.pps.net/cms/lib/OR01913224/Centricity/domain/61/student_trans_forms/GT_HitcherServiceV2.pdf

Snow Routes

During periods of inclement weather the bus routes change and students may be picked up or dropped off at a different location from the usual bus stop. A snow route pamphlet is available on the Transportation website: https://www.pps.net/Page/2237

If you hear an announcement that Portland Public Schools will run “Snow Routes” please use the alternate stops, if applicable. (Stops not listed are not affected. These students will be picked up and dropped off at regular stops.) Parents are encouraged to make individual decisions regarding their student’s school attendance during inclement weather conditions. Precise times are not possible during snow days due to inclement weather traffic delays. Students should be to their regular or alternate stop approximately 10 minutes prior to the scheduled time. When snow routes are used, they will be in effect AM, midday, and PM regardless of continued weather conditions.

Bus Behavior Guidelines

  • Be respectful, listen, and follow directions of the bus driver
  • Sit quietly, facing forward, with feet out of the aisle. Do not change seats
  • Keep hands, feet, body parts to self at all times
  • Inappropriate language is not allowed
  • Proper conduct on the way to and from school and while waiting at the bus stop is expected
  • Safety is required of all bus riders at all times

District Bus Discipline Procedure

1st written referral and warning

2nd written referral and parent contacted

3rd written referral, parent contacted, possible loss of bus privilege for a period of time, possible behavioral plan put in place

Continued refusal to follow directions of the bus driver and/or to obey bus safety rules may require students to be excluded/removed from bus riding privileges.

Student Safety

7

The safety of students before, during and after school is a critical concern of Astor staff. It has prompted us to establish guidelines that we believe will facilitate a safe situation for all children. Please read these guidelines and assist your child(ren) in understanding them.

Before & After School Guidelines

Astor School staff are unable to provide supervision for children arriving on school grounds prior to 7:45 am or after 2:30 pm. Please do not leave students unsupervised outside of these hours.

Portland Public Schools are not responsible for incidents, accidents or injuries during unsupervised hours. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

After school care is provided on site, on a fee-for-service basis by Champions. Visit their website for more information: www.discoverchampions.com

Private Transportation Students

Parents/guardians are responsible for seeing that their children enter the building safely at 7:53 am and leave school grounds at dismissal times.

Bus Riders

Parents/guardians are responsible for seeing that their children board the bus in the morning and for communicating with them their after school destination. Please assist us by teacher your child the street name of their bus stop.

Car Drop Off and Pick Up Guidelines

The drop off/pick up procedure here is meant to ensure the the safety of our students. Please help us keep children safe by remembering the following:

  • Do not park in any location other than parking spaces. Observe marked zones and curbs
  • Yale is a local access/bus zone only
  • The parking lot is reserved for staff and district vehicles only
  • Please observe the speed limit and watch for children in the street

Animals

Per PPS policy, animals are not allowed in school facilities during school hours without prior permission from the principal. This includes during arrival and dismissal times. In the event permission is granted by the administration, animals must be controlled at all times. Student safety must be the utmost priority.

Building Security

All parents, visitors and volunteers are required to sign in at the office prior to entering areas of the building outside the office. Identification badges must be worn at all times during visits.

Raptor System

First time visitors and volunteers will be asked to provide a government issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.). Office staff will scan the ID and issue a badge. Volunteers must pass a PPS background check prior to working with students. This will include a vaccination requirement.

For security purposes, outside doors will be locked during school hours.

For families picking up their student(s) after school:

Teachers and K-5 students will exit either from their classroom door or on the east or west side on the front side of the building. Middle school students will exit on the east or west side of the building from the back side of the building, unless they are picking up a younger sibling after school.

Bus riders in K-5 will proceed to a designated location to wait for the middle school dismissal bell at 2:30 pm. Then, all bus riders will board their bus at the front of the building.

Any student not met for pick up will return to the office and wait for their ride.

We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe and secure environment for all students.

Drills/Procedures

By state law (ORS 336.071), all schools in Oregon are required to conduct safety drills on a monthly basis. In our continued efforts to create a safe learning environment at Astor, we have developed a comprehensive plan to respond to emergency situations on or near campus. We conduct a variety of drills to practice our safety procedures. Parents are asked to cooperate and follow all drill routines in you are in the building during a drill.

Please talk with your child(ren) and reassure them that we practice safety drill to help keep them safe.

Emergency Planning

Please be aware that we may experience school closures, late openings, and early dismissals due to inclement weather.

Please create and discuss family emergency plan with your children in the event you may not be at home when your child arrives from school. Include instructions regarding where to go and what to do. Make sure your children know their home address, phone numbers and the school number as applicable.

School Closure and Late Opening

When determining if schools should remain open or closed in bad weather, Portland Public Schools gives primary consideration to student staff and safety. Although school closures are difficult for families, safety is the most important issue to consider.

The district is committed to making a decision as early as possible and communicating it quickly. Snowy or icy weather often results in a two-hour late start, with the possibility that the school ultimately may close for the day if the weather does not improve. As soon as a decision is made, the district sends an automated phone call to families with information. Also, local radio and television stations broadcast closure and delay information.

For the most up-to-date information online, go to www.pps.net

Automated School Closure Information

  • Remind texts will be sent
  • An automated phone call is sent to affected families
  • Information will be on the PPS Facebook page

Types of Delay or Closure Announcements

One of the following messages will be announced:

PPS 2-Hour Late Opening, Buses on Snow Routes: schools will begin two hours after the regular starting time. Buses on snow routes. (See page 5 of this handbook for snow route information.) Astor opens at 9:35am.

PPS Regular Opening Buses On Snow Routes: Means schools begin at regular starting time. Buses on snow routes AM, Mid-day, and PM.

PPS Open, Except Specifically Named Schools: Means only certain schools will be closed for students.

Two hour delay or early closure on snow days: In the rare event PPS calls a 2 hour late opening or early closure, the district and school will communicate the change.

Remind App

For most school communications, Astor uses the Remind app to text messages to families about upcoming events, school resources and other important information. Your child’s teacher will invite you to join and you will receive text messages from them, the school office or the Principal. It is critical that you use this app as it’s our primary form of communication. Please contact the office if you have any questions accessing it.

School Messenger

Astor also utilizes the School Messenger platform to send phone calls or emails to the schoolwide community or to specific classrooms. You may also receive automated attendance calls from School Messenger.

Student Health

11

A Registered Nurse will be assisting at Astor School one day per week. The RN assigned to our school will give direct nursing care to students who become ill or injured at school. The RN will also plan and conduct vision screenings (Gr K,1,3,5,7) hearing screenings (Gr K-1), assist with communicable disease control and monitor chronic health conditions. Please contact our RN if you have any questions regarding the specifics of any of these areas.

A School Health Assistant (SHA) will be assigned to Astor each day that students are in session. The SHA will provide minor first aid, administer medications, monitor immunizations and assist the school nurse with other health-related tasks.

Immunizations

Oregon State law requires parents of all students entering Oregon schools for the first time to provide proof of immunization status before attending school. Children without the required immunizations will be excluded from school, unless the parent/guardian provides the required immunization exemption forms.

Medications

Students may not carry medications, (prescribed or over the counter) to school. Parents must complete and sign an form authorizing school staff to administer medication. All medications must be in their original container and must include the pharmacy label and be brought to school by the parent or guardian.

Allergies

It is extremely important to advise the school nurse, SHA or school office staff of any severe allergies your child may have such as to bee stings, nuts, etc. This information can then be shared with the rest of the care team for your student’s safety.

Illness

We are unable to care for children at school when they are ill. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact parents/guardians to arrange for the student to be picked up.

COVID Info here

You can find the PPS district resource for COVID here.

https://www.mkt-box.com/pps/backtoschool2021

Accidents

In the event your child is injured at school, it is our expectation that a teacher or supervision adult be notified immediately of the incident. This is essential in our efforts to provide adequate care and advise parents of the situation. Depending on the severity of an injury, a Student Injury report will be made with the PPS Risk Management Department.

Emergencies

In the event of a serious illness, accident or other emergency involving a student, the Principal is authorized to send a student to the hospital named on the registration form), or the nearest hospital if none is named), for immediate care.

Food From Home

Due to State Health regulations, any food sent to school for treats or special occasions must be store-purchased and individually packaged. We are unable to accept any “home prepared” foods at school. No exceptions will be made.

Any “party” arrangements must be made with the teacher prior to food items being brought to school. Thank you for following this guideline

It is equally important that parents help us by instructing students not to share or exchange lunches or snacks.

PPS Health and Safety Measures

PPS prioritizes a healthy in-person learning experience for every PPS student and staff member. Layered health and safety measures will help us maximize full in-person learning at PPS. PPS will also be guided by public health expertise. Find out more about PPS’ health and safety measures here:

Our Astor Belief about Behavior

At Astor, we believe that every child can and will succeed academically and behaviorally given conditions that meet their individual needs. We see that the traditional use of punishment in response to misbehavior tends to alienate children from their school community and often escalates or complicates unsuccessful behaviors. It is critical that we explicitly, intentionally and regularly teach, practice and reinforce positive behavioral expectations for all students in every classroom and in the school overall.

Student misbehavior communicates to us unmet social and emotional needs. Meeting unsuccessful behaviors with compassion and curiosity allows us to understand how to help students learn and find success. While corrective consequences are effective in some circumstances, instructional and restorative responses often allow us to strengthen relationships with students who are struggling while they develop the skills that will lead to success in the future.

It is our responsibility as a school to develop a multi-tiered system of support for students and to utilize these supports regularly to ensure that all students have access to success. There is stark and ample evidence that our systems of discipline have disproportionately and negatively affected our students of color. In response, we strive to take an active role in correcting this injustice and maintaining systems of support and instruction that are equitable for all.

A copy of the Handbook of Student Responsibilities, Rights and Discipline is here. This document is still utilized by Astor staff. However, an updated version is expected from our district this school year.

We believe that we must work together with families, educators, and community partners to ensure the success of all our kids at Astor.

Guidelines and Policies

17

Research-Based Homework Guidelines

Some teachers may assign purposeful homework. Legitimate purposes of homework include practicing a skill or process that students can do independently but not fluently, and providing opportunities for students to explore topics of their own interest.

They will work with families that need support in adjusting homework to a plan that makes sense for their child.

Recess Policy

Astor students have daily recess periods during the school day. In agreement with PPS policies, a mid-morning or mid- afternoon wellness break not to exceed 15 minutes will also be embedded in K-5 schedules.

Lost and Found

Parents are highly encouraged to put their child’s name or other identifiable mark on clothing items to assist us in locating the proper owner. Unclaimed items are donated to the Roosevelt HS or PTA Clothing Closet.

Textbooks and Library Books

Students are responsible for assigned textbooks and library books. Lost books may incur a fee.

Student Money and Valuables

To prevent loss and disappointment, students are asked not to bring large amounts of money or items of value to school. In the event this should occur, it is recommended that the student give it to his/her/their teacher or office for safekeeping.

Toys and Electronic Items

As with money and valuables, students should not bring toys and electronic items from home. In the interest of safety, skateboards and wheeled shoes are not allowed at school.

Telephone and Cell Phone Policies

Student Use of School Phones

The office phone may be used by students in the event of an emergency or with written permission from the teacher. Forgotten items from home do not constitute an emergency. Rather, we emphasize to students their personal responsibility to ensure assignments and school supplies are with them in the morning. School phone use for making arrangements for after school play dates will not be permitted.

Messages to Students

To eliminate interruptions to classroom instruction, we request that parents clarify after school plans with children prior to their arrival at school.

Cell Phone Use

Students may NOT use cell phones during school hours, including lunch time. This will avoid distraction in the classroom, as well as prevent loss. If students need to bring cellphones to school for after school communication, they must be stored off and away during school hours. Please help your student comply with the no-cell-phone policy by not calling or texting your student during school hours. Astor policy is here.

Field Trips

A permission slip will be sent home for each school-sponsored field trip. We must have signed permission by a parent or guardian to allow a child to leave school. It is customary for teachers to take their classes on walking field trips in the school community at different times during the school year. In order to allow for these walking activities, a permission slip will be issued at the beginning of the year and will extend for the entire school year.

Dress Code

Student attire and grooming must permit the student to participate in learning without posing a risk to the health or safety of any student or school district personnel. The basic dress code includes the following guidelines:

  • Students must wear clothing including both a shirt with pants or skirt, or the equivalent (for example dresses, leggings, or shorts) and shoes.
  • Shirts and dresses must have fabric in the front and on the sides (under the arms).
  • Clothing must cover undergarments (waistbands and straps excluded).
  • Fabric covering breasts, genitals and buttocks must be opaque.
  • Hats and other headwear must allow the face to be visible to staff, and not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff. Hoodies must allow the face and ears to be visible to school staff.
  • Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, wood shop, and other activities where unique hazards exist.
  • Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.

For a copy of the PPS policy regarding student dress code, please contact the school office. Or see the link here.

Parent / School Communication

19

Communication is an important component of a successful school experience at Astor School. With your child, communicate your interest in them and how they spend their day. Here are some communication best practices:

  • With a classroom concern, connect with your child’s teacher first to resolve the issue
  • Don’t wait until a small question, comment or incident grows into a big one
  • School counselors can also assist with your concerns
  • If, after communicating with the teacher and/or counselor, you still have concerns, contact the school administration for additional supports
  • We are more than happy to listen and clarify any questions or concerns

Parent/Staff Communication

Clear and timely communication between parents and teachers is essential for the ultimate success of the child and their school career. Parents may contact teachers via phone message, notes through their children, email and Remind. Likewise, contacting the administration can be achieved in the same manner.

In the event you place a call to a staff member, please understand that they are generally not available to return phone calls until after classes are dismissed or when non-student contact time permits. Emails to staff are a convenient alternative to phone calls. Staff email addresses are listed at the beginning of this handbook and on the school web page.

Astor Connection

The Astor Connection newsletter, sent home regularly, is published by the office staff in partnership with the school, Astor PTSO and the district. The Astor Connection is an important sources of information regarding school events, PTSO happenings, Site Council and more.

Remind App

PPS and Astor School use the Remind App for two-way communication between teachers and families. This allows for text, email, push notifications and phone calls. When your student is added to a class you will receive an email or text to join the class. You may add the Remind App to your phone but it is not necessary to do so. For more information about Remind, please watch the “Getting Started for Parents” video. You may also contact the school office.

School Messenger

Astor School also utilizes School Messenger to communicate with families. School Messenger is a rapid notification system used to send mass email, phone calls and text messages. Automated absence notifications and emergency communications are also sent via School Messenger. To ensure that you receive messages from School Messenger, please make sure that your email and phone numbers are current. You may opt out of receiving messages from School Messenger, however, doing so will discontinue electronic communication from Astor School and PPS.

Twitter

To see learning in action, follow Astor on Twitter @Astor.

Facebook

Astor utilizes Facebook to post pictures and send messages and other information to our community. Friend us at PPS Astor K-8 School.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Formalized conferences are held in the fall of each school year. Conferences are an excellent opportunity to ask questions and share information about your child. Please remember that if you have concerns during the course of the school year, do not hesitate to request a conference. Astor School staff is happy to work together on addressing concerns.

Classroom Visitations*

Parents are welcome to visit in their child’s classroom. Arrangements may be made by contacting the teacher at least one day in advance. We appreciate your efforts to minimize distractions by limiting unstructured visits. A visit to the classroom or when volunteering should not be seen as an opportunity to conference with the teacher. All visitors must sign in at the office and wear a badge while in the building.

*We will follow district, state and public health guidelines for health and safety. At this time, there will be limited visitation and volunteer opportunities to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Watch for updates in our school communications.

Programs at Astor

21

Spanish

Acquisition of more than one language enriches personal growth and helps facilitate international understanding. Astor provides the opportunity for students in all grades to learn Spanish.

Visual Arts

Opportunities for creative expression and knowledge in the arts are integral to instruction at Astor School. As the arts are integrated and infused into our curriculum, children are given experiences which build skills and appreciation for a variety of art.

Music

Grades K-2 students will focus on general music education. 5th grade will focus on singing, performing on instruments, and learning about instruments and their role in an ensemble. Students in 3rd and 4th grades will be working with recorders in addition to singing, xylophone and bucket drumming. Middle school students will have the opportunity to participate in beginning and advanced band as an elective.

Physical Education (PE)

The PE program includes the performance and understanding of basic motor skills, games, and lifelong fitness activities as well as the social and personal skills related to participating in physical activities. Additionally, the PE program promotes health, safety, and the well-being of students through establishing healthy behaviors, skills, and goal-setting activities.

STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math)

All K-5 students have weekly STEAM classes, where activities involve creative problem solving and the exploration of the STEAM fields. The teacher also works with other teachers to support science and math instruction and assessment. Middle school STEAM electives include engineering, creative project design, photography and filmmaking.

Media Center

The Astor School library serves as a resource center for students from kindergarten through eighth grade, parents and teachers. Students are encouraged to become involved in daily reading and explore our vast world of information. They are taught information literacy skills which will be valuable throughout their lives.

Technology

PPS recognizes that equitable access to technology and digital resources is an essential part of learning. The PPS 1:1 Chromebook take-home program provides every PPS student with an assigned Chromebook dedicated for that student's use. Students may carry their computers between school and home. Contact the school office for more information about technology assistance.

Talented and Gifted (TAG)

Students are observed for traits, attributes and behaviors that display potential giftedness. By using the results of these observations, teachers and parents may nominate students for further evaluation. Our

goal is to recognize and provide services to a broad range of gifted students. Look for TAG information on the bulletin board in the main hall as well as through the TAG information page on the school or district website. You may contact the building TAG coordinator, a staff member who is determined eah fall.

Activities and Events

25

Back to School Gatherings and Events

Astor offers opportunities for families to meet or reconnect with staff, community partners and other families whose students attend Astor, see classrooms and learn about programs at Astor. Included are Kindergarten and 1st Grade gatherings and Back To School Nights. Look for communication from the school about dates and times for these events.

Back To School Night

This affords parents/guardians the opportunity to learn about classroom programs. Homeroom and specialist teachers provide overviews of their goals and activities for the year. This is a great chance to learn more about the exciting things that are happening in your child’s classroom.

Principal Coffee Chats

Plan to come to Astor on the third Friday of the month to learn timely information and enjoy informed conversation with the principals. Astor PTSO provides coffee for these chats.

Volunteer Recognition

Toward the end of the school year, we honor the hundreds of hours donated by our amazing volunteers. Please contact your child’s teacher or the Astor PTSO to find out more about volunteering opportunities at Astor.

To learn more about the requirements for volunteering with PPS, please visit: https://www.pps.net/volunteer

Run for Astor

Students have the opportunity to raise funds for the school. This 30 minute jog-a-thon raises funds by pledges made to runners, who collect pledges after they participate. Funds raised will be used to purchase supplies, support arts and music programs and other educational opportunities.

Talent Show

Astor’s annual talent show is an opportunity for our students to share their many talents with the entire school. Watch for sign-up and date in Astor’s communications to families.

Student Recognition Assemblies

Students will be recognized for demonstrating the traits that contribute to making Astor a great place to learn. Assemblies are planned each month for a different character trait. Check out the calendar in this handbook for the traits we recognize and dates of the assemblies.

Grandparents/Special Friends Day

This annual event is a popular tradition at Astor. Grandparents and “special friends” are invited to visit classrooms and take part in their student’s education.

Family Activity Nights

Astor offers family activity nights throughout the year with fun activities for the whole family. Many of these events are planned by our Astor PTSO. Events include learning activities or simply fun activities for parents, students and staff. Below are some examples of activities that have been offered:

PTSO Movie Nights

PTSO Restaurant Nights

PTSO Carnival

PTSO Winterhawks, Timbers or Blazer Nights

Science Fairs

Book Sales

*Note: Please look for communication from Astor to ensure that these events will take place. The calendar is projected over the summer but updates may occur to ensure the health and safety of our community.

Student Resources & Supports

27

Student Intervention Team

School staff and administrators participate in this multi-disciplinary team. This team meets to determine the course of action to be taken with students who have been referred for possible assessment. The committee also serves as a resource to staff and families who seek new ideas and strategies in order to address the needs of particular students. Parents are consulted throughout the process.

School Psychologist

The school psychologist functions as the school’s primary link with district special education services. S/he serves as a member of the Building Evaluation Team which meets regularly to determine plans of action for students with educational needs. If it is determined that assessment is not appropriate for the student, the school psychologist may assist the teacher or staff in developing a building level plan to meet the particular needs of the student. If the student is to be assessed, it is the responsibility of of the school psychologist to obtain written consent from the parent, to get developmental/social history, to administer cognitive and academic tests, to observe classroom behavior and complete checklists. Medical reports, when necessary, are collected.

Adapted PE Teacher

Adapted physical education is specially designed instruction for students who require adaptations and modifications to participate safely in PE classes. Teachers provide a continuum of services, consultation, assessment, program planning, advocacy and behavior management strategies.

Communications/Behavior Classroom

Students qualifying for Focus programs may be assigned to a self-contained classroom. Astor offers a kindergarten through second grade Communications/Behavior program. While assigned to this specific classroom, students are integrated into general education classes as much as possible.

School Counselors

The Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling program is an essential and integral part of our district’s educational program and mission. It exists in order to promote the students’ abilities to live, learn, work and contribute to their communities. The guidance and counseling program is developmentally appropriate and involves assisting students with continuous growth and transitions from kindergarten past high school graduation. The school counselors provide a myriad of services: classroom guidance, individual and group counseling, parent coaching, collaboration with teachers regarding all students, and consulting with teachers regarding academic and behavioral concerns.

School Psychologist

Occupational therapy uses activities and adapted surroundings to facilitate the student’s independent function and to decrease the effects of the handicapping condition on the student’s ability to participate in the educational process. Student referred for assessment may qualify for this service. A therapy program is designed to assist the child.

Speech and Language

Speech and language services are provided to students with communication disorders such as articulation, fluency, voice or language difficulties. The speech/language pathologists diagnose and provide intervention for those students who are eligible for services based on Oregon State eligibility criteria.

Learning Center (LC)

Students who qualify for special education assistance in reading, writing, and/or math are eligible to receive services from the LC staff. Supplemental instruction is provided to students which is coordinated with homeroom teachers and other support programs.

ESL

Students who qualify for support in learning English are eligible to receive services from ESL staff. Inclusive, quality instruction is provided that honors students’ racial, cultural and linguistic assets. ESL staff prepares every ESL student to succeed in school.

PPS Graduate Portrait

The Graduate Portrait is a clear and ambitious description of what the community wants its students to know, be and be able to do, in order to prepare them to thrive in their lives and careers. Our graduate portrait includes attributes needed to prepare students to understand, confront, and change a global social environment that includes racial injustice and systems that perpetuate oppression. The Graduate Portrait inspires and emboldens educators and district staff to adopt innovations that are stimulated by signals about the future and to achieve results by meeting the needs of every student. It enables leaders to align leadership, management, teaching and learning, and resources so that the learning system produces results that deliver on the promise of the Vision.
