Difference Between an Early College student and an Early College “Olympian”

Early College student:

*Takes EC classes trying to cancel out some WHS graduation requirements (see “class availability to see what courses count.

*Takes classes when they can.

Early College Olympian:

*Takes EC classes trying to earn an Associate degree (2 yr. degree) while in high school

Early College student:

*Takes EC classes to cancel out general education requirements a student would need to take in college (History, English, Speech, etc.).

*Takes EC classes when they can.

Early College Olympian:

*Will need to EC take classes every semester and every summer to complete the Associate degree by high school graduation.

Types of Degrees Available for Olympians

Associate of Arts (AA):

*60 credits

*31 credits in required courses

*29 of the 60 credits are elective credits

*Most flexible degree

Associate of Science – Natural Science (ASNS) – “STEM Olympians”:

*60 credits

*Most courses are math/science-based

*Stricter schedule of classes

*Engineering, Biological Science, Information & Computer Science, Physical Science

Associate in Science – Teaching (AST):

*60 credits

*22 credits are ED courses

*Students can complete the entire AA degree through Early College courses

*Students will eventually need to enroll in Running Start courses (attend classes at the college campus with adult leaners) to complete degree

*Students will eventually need to enroll in Running Start courses (attend classes at the college campus with adult leaners) to complete degree

Things to Consider…..

*Other commitments: Sports, Band, Clubs, Work, Family

*Your Student Type: Can you balance many things at once? Do you procrastinate?

*Cost: Early College courses will continue to be fully covered. Running Start courses may not be funded in the future

*College GPA begins with any Early College/Running Start course you take (low college GPA’s can affect future college financial aid)

*Meet all Program and Course deadlines – extensions may not be granted

*Mandatory advising each semester with Mrs. Fukunaga (or one of the EC Coordinators)

*Mandatory advising in Senior year with LCC Early College Counselor (Ms. Washington) – prior to registering for any Running Start course

*Read all emails as respond as needed

*All 9th graders interested in pursuing any one of the Olympian tracks can schedule advising meetings with Mrs. Fukunaga next semester to plan courses for Summer/Fall 2026. Please follow the examples in the presentation to select your Early College courses for Spring 2026 (presentation will be posted on the Early College site).

*All current Olympians need to schedule advising appointments with Mrs. Fukunaga PRIOR to Spring 2026 registration of Early College & Running Start courses
