How to un-conference

Standards, source, and minds are all better open

Listen more than you talk

Section 1

17 of 44

Nuts and bolts - how each session works

  • 28 minutes total - 5ish minutes (10 at the absolute max) to present a problem, describe it precisely, offer terminology or references to relevant prior art
    • Didn’t prepare anything? No sweat, find a co-convener or just ask the room for help!
    • Leave 5 minutes at the end for next steps, and let people get to the next session!
  • Roles:
    • 1 or 2 conveners - direct traffic, but don’t dominate the conversation
    • 1 or 2 main scribes - get volunteers at the beginning, and others can chip in if they’re distracted, or if they’re asking a question/participating
  • The shared notes on hackmd are the main output of each session
  • Floating in and out of sessions is OK– don’t get distracted by floaters and lurkers and listeners!

Goals of each session - Convener’s priorities

  • Build a shared understanding of a problem and multiple solutions
  • Do not shill, and let people know if you feel they are advancing a business agenda more than they are advancing the conversation
  • Code of conduct – people are volunteering their time to listen, respect their time
  • The shared notes on hackmd are the main output of each session
    • Include contact info of choice if you want to be contacted later about the session
  • Careful with trade secrets or intellectual property
    • your words may get attributed to you and/or to your employer!
    • Be precise what’s a personal opinion and what should not get included in the notes!

What comes next

Section 2

20 of 44

Sessions can be casual discussions… or the start of a longer conversation

Use the “next steps” section of the notes to hope and invite future collaborators who read the notes later but aren’t in the room

  • These notes will be published on github, so you may want to use your github handle as contact info (you’ll get a github notification that way)
  • Link to threads on github and other fora where related conversations are happening, including standards mailing lists for experimental/evolving building blocks

21 of 44

Longer conversations should pick a new venue to continue on

If the first date goes well and you want to take the next step with your group, explicitly set some time at the end of your session to sketch out some possible next steps and discuss who (in the room) would contribute if the conversation continued…

  1. As an EIP/ERC in the Ethereum Foundation improvement process
  2. As a CAIP in the Chain Agnostic Standards Alliance improvement and documentation process
  3. As a work item of a Wallets and Interfaces Working Group in the EF IP (aka AllWalletDevs)

How sessions add up to an Uncon

Agenda Creation - See schedule here →

https://bit.ly/walletuncon2023

  1. Every proposer present puts X before their title (sorry latecomers and no-shows)
  2. Quick round of <60second summaries
  3. Everyone puts one + next to every session they would want attend (max 8 total)
  4. Ranked-choice time-slot selection
  5. Everyone not scheduled can leave contact info for curious parties who read the notes later

Report-out after the last session

https://bit.ly/walletuncon2023

We’ll go around the room trying to collectively remember (and advertise for!) every session.

  • Anyone who attended can speak for a group, does not need to be convener or scribe
  • Next steps and calls to action are welcome!
  • Aim for 30-45seconds to get us through all the sessions in 30min
  • Great opportunity to add something to the notes (even if you weren’t there!)
