I graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and earned my Masters Degree +30 in School Counseling K-12 from Missouri Baptist University. This is my 12th year as an elementary school counselor in Parkway and my 9th at Barretts.
A little about me.. I am also a Personal Trainer and Certified Youth Exercise/Behavior Change Specialist. My wife Rachel is also in education and is a high school science teacher in Rockwood. We have 3 children, our son Grayson (7), our daughter Spencer (6) and son Cameron (4). My hobbies include spending time with family and friends, photography and golfing. I am also a big basketball fan and like to travel to different cities for NBA games. I am excited to see all of you again, and to meet those of you who are new to our school! Meet my whole crew below...
Hi Bobcats! My name is Jamie Gender and I am back for year 2 at Barretts! I am our building’s Mental Health Specialist. I am a licensed clinical social worker. I received my Bachelor’s in Psychology and Sociology from Mizzou and my Masters of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. As the Mental Health Specialist, I support students and families facing unique challenges by addressing social and emotional well-being. Depending on student and family need, individual counseling may be provided, as well as assistance in linking families with appropriate resources within the community.
I have two dogs- a labradoodle and a goldendoodle who love to take walks and snooze on the couch. Some of my favorite things are drinking coffee on my patio, listening to Taylor Swift, the Wordle, and cheering on the Mizzou Tigers. I love to take walks, puzzle, and spend time with friends and family. In the spring, I coach Girls on the Run at Barretts.

Curriculum
At least once a month, your child’s grade level counselor will visit their classroom to deliver a guidance lesson to the entire class. These lessons cover a wide variety of topics, all in which cover different aspects of social, emotional and behavioral development. These lessons include but are not limited to developing and keeping friendships, controlling emotions, problem solving, mindset and work ethic, understand feelings, and more. When needed, additional lessons will be delivered based on individual classroom need.
Group Counseling
At some point during your child’s time here at Barretts, it's possible that they might end up in a small group. These groups might be informal lunch bunches, or they could be more intervention targeted groups. Groups will meet once a week, anywhere from 6-8 weeks. Parents will be asked permission for students to take part in small groups. Some examples of a small group could be:
-Friendship groups
-Social Skills groups
-Movement break groups
-Grief groups
-Second Steps groups
*Groups are formed based on student need and are typically developed from teacher/staff recommendation.
Individual Counseling
Like group counseling, at some point during your child’s time here at Barretts, they may end up spending some one-on-one time with a counselor. These could be random isolated instances, or they could be a more regular and scheduled time developed with the teacher and parents. Parents will be informed of any regular one-on-one time spent with a student and will be updated on those visits.
