Hello families,

• Welcome to Week 9 in Grade 5!
• Thank you for all of your help supporting your child to be on time and dressed in

full uniform. As a friendly reminder, crocs are not allowed. In addition, navy and

khaki bottoms are allowed only. Black leggings, grey sweatpants, white pants, etc. are not permitted. I will send emails daily to families when students are not in compliance with the school uniform. Thank you for your cooperation. I have seen an improvement in school uniform compliance, and I thank you for your commitment. Our class looks mature and ready to learn when they are in full school uniform.

• Thank you to the families who attended parent teacher conferences on 10/20 and 10/21.

• We participated in a Red Ribbon Walk with The Perth Amboy Police Department on Friday, 10/24 . The students walked on the track with our entire school. The students showcased their posters they designed in class. They worked so hard! I shared photos on ClassDojo from our parade.

• Looking ahead: Trunk or Treat will take place on Wednesday, 10/29 from 5PM-6PM. Tickets are $1 each. Please return your RSVP forms by Tuesday, 10/28. We are accepting bags of candy as donations. I will be present at Trunk or Treat. See you there!
• Looking ahead: We will participate in Adaptive Testing in class on Tuesday, 10/28, Wednesday, 10/29, and Thursday, 10/30. All devices are required to stay in school from Monday, 10/27 to Thursday, 10/30.

This is how your child’s grade is calculated for each subject.

• Our school days take place from 8:35AM-3:00PM.
• I complete your child’s attendance every day online in the morning. If a child enters my classroom after 8:45AM, this is considered a tardy/late.
• Each child has his/her own desk in the classroom.
• All class supplies are provided.
• We rotate Science and Social Studies every marking period. We will learn Social Studies in MP1.
• Our special is Period 1 from 8:50AM-9:35AM.
• Homeroom takes place from 8:35AM-8:50AM. This provides us 15 minutes only to unpack, eat breakfast, and complete morning meeting. It is very important that your child arrives to school on time please.
• On Tuesdays and Fridays, please ensure your child wears sneakers for Physical Education.
• On Tuesdays, our special rotates during Period 2 between Media and Technology.
• On Tuesdays, we have two specials: Physical Education and Media (or Technology)

• Trunk or Treat will take place on Wednesday, 10/29 from 5PM-6PM. Tickets cost $1 for each Edward J. Patten student. Please return your RSVP forms (sent home on 10/17) with your money attached. Thank you!

This week, we are learning:

​

• Math: Students add and subtract fractions with related units by using pictorial models. Students use a tape diagram to rename fractions to make like units so they can add and subtract fractions with related units. Students estimate to determine whether the sum or difference in an expression is less than 1, between 1 and 2, or greater than 2. Then they find sums and differences numerically or by using a number line

​

• Reading: Students will analyze the text that they are reading so they can make text based predictions. They know they have it when they can make text based predictions and justify them with examples from the text.

​

• Science: Science will take place in Marking Periods 2 and 3.

​

• Social Studies: Social Studies will take place in Marking Periods 1 and 4. Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from 9/15 to 10/15. This week, we will compare and contrast the three English settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. We will also locate Native American and English settlements on a map of colonial southern New England. In addition to that, we will develop and use specific criteria as individuals and in groups to assess works of art.

• Writing: Students will write with a sequencing of events so they can evoke the emotions of a reader. They know they have it when they can revise their draft so that readers feel the emotions of their story.
