What is Placemaking?Our Definition

Placemaking is a holistic concept and practical method for enhancing a space, neighborhoods, or even cities.

It encourages communities to come together to rethink and transform spaces into central, vibrant parts of their lives.

By fostering a strong bond between people and their shared spaces, placemaking involves a cooperative process aimed at creating environments that offer maximum value to all stakeholders while transforming lives.

Epic Communities were engaged by UNHCR Malaysia to remodel their reception space that sees over 800 refugees every day.

The design intent was to create a safe space physically & emotionally for staff & refugees. These included separate passageway, improved safety facilities, interview rooms & comfortable waiting areas.

Applying our participatory design approach, we worked with UNHCR staff from all departments through personal interviews, site immersion, observation, and curated design workshops. This led to spaces which are thoughtfully designed to elevate and make efficient the work and visitor spaces, and to foster dignity of people interacting with the space.

Farm Fresh is the largest Malaysian producer of fresh dairy products. They approached us to create their first experience farm for visitors to journey through a holistic farm model with guided tours for people to learn, taste and feel a holistic farming economy. From milk production to the fertiliser that feeds into their organic fruits & vegetable gardens to the dishes served at their cafe - we designed seven buildings to create a seamless flow for visitors.

The design took a unique interpretation of the iconic Farm Fresh logo which became the ticketing entrance of the farm. The aim of the design of buildings was to pay tribute to the natural environment by blending natural elements to envelope the structures.

Obama Foundation

Together with the Obama Foundation, we worked with an existing low-income flats community and Toy Libraries Malaysia to highlight the community’s strength, resilience & capability.

As 40% of the 10,000 residents are under 6 years old with approximately 2,000 families, we designed and co-built playscapes, a sports area and a community garden with the Obama Foundation leaders.

This showcases how low-cost housing areas can be a place of dignity and inspiration while enabling the vision and strengths of the community.

Peter approached us about developing a home & wellness center upon a piece of land in the hills of Tanarimba, Janda Baik.

This led to a custom co-design project with Peter that applied our modular home as a base layout. Set within a slope, we wanted the home to achieve views to the natural slope at the rear and also outward to the forests of Pahang. Steel structures were used to ensure the home’s ability to hold the large expanse of glazing while being lightweight in its overall form.

Micro housing challenges the idea of space while also addressing the issue of economy and affordability. We envision a self-sustaining home that is affordable yet also takes only a small footprint as we think about the density of a city. We have tested a range of components along with our partners to make this successful.

Some of the self-sustaining amenities we have built with includes rainwater harvesting, solar power generation, human waste management system among others. This has proven the concept of sustainable living and off the grid living. Moving forward, we have also tested smart home technologies to incorporate into our micro houses such as IOT systems.

Eco Classroom

This project was to design & develop an outdoor classroom for a non-profit organisation to host children and adults where they would practice traditional ways of living and learning. The non-profit organisation believes in eco-education and eco-living. Located right outside of Kg. Orang Asli Gurney in Ulu Yam. The founder, Ms Sharley have been running Greenlife project for almost 2 years educating children and city folks to live in an eco environment, promote organic farming and sustainable building methods.

To translate their beliefs and values into a physical gathering space, we designed a 16ft x 24ft gazebo using natural local materials such as a timber deck platform and bamboo to frame the walls. The structure opens itself to nature through its open design encouraging fluidity of the space and flexibility of the programmes that will be held in this space.

Toy Library

Datin PH Wong from Toy Libraries Malaysia has been setting up Toy Libraries across Malaysia. The Toy Library is to provide a platform for early childhood education, and she believes it is very crucial and key to the learning and communication development of the child and to help them thrive in their entire formal educational life.

A Toy Library is akin to a book library, but with toys. Kids borrow toys for a period of time to play around the vicinity or to take back home A librarian will be assigned to keep record of toys.
