How we work

#designandclimate

Design like there’s a climate crisis

2 of 8

Through face to face meet-ups, conversations and case studies the community is openly building and sharing tools and guidance to help designers adapt their practice to always be designing with the planet in mind.

Our collective principles

  1. We exist to build confidence in leading discussions about climate and shape knowledge and practice. There are no experts, but we seek to grow expertise.
  2. We balance the positive and negative aspects of the challenge at hand. We make constructive contributions, knowing that staying positive helps us take action.
  3. Contributors can work autonomously to further community objectives. Permission is assumed, not given. We collaborate across the design and tech communities.
  4. We evidence what works and why. We share knowledge openly. We iterate.
  5. Global problems require diverse viewpoints to craft viable solutions. Design + Climate is welcoming to all.
  6. We are biased towards action. We create practical tools that help make change.

How YOU can contribute

Craft contentGet in touch to run a workshop, suggest a discussion theme, lead a discussion, or become a guest speaker

Take it to youGet support from us to introduce the environment into your own workplace or practice through guidance and tools

How YOU can contribute

ParticipateContribute to (online) workshops and discussions, share resources and initiatives, actively discuss and develop our thinking

Participate in conversations and share your resources on the slack channel too:

  • Share useful resources on the #resources channel with a little description and context (where you’ve found it, when to use it, have you tried or tested it)
  • Share interesting reads and finds in the #links-and-reads

How YOU can contribute

Show upAttend (online) events, where audience members can listen to talks and discussions without the pressure to contribute

How YOU can contribute

Keep it practicalShare a tool, methodology, idea:

  • What did you do?
  • What was the outcome?

Develop and prototype new methods or tools through workshops and in your personal practice, and share your learnings:

  • Prototype a method to be added to the library (see the list of suggested ones on Trello)

We don’t treat people differently based on how long they’ve been involved. If you think someone should do “x”, then that someone is you!

‘Cross-channel contributors’ and ‘contributors’

‘Cross-channel contributors’ ensure that the activities inform each other and stay true to our mission and strategy.

‘Contributors’ work on specific tasks. Each member contributes to as many activities as they would like to.

Here is how YOU could contribute to an activity:

Join a channel on Slack

  • You will find a summary of this month’s activities in the #activities description
  • Add the new initiative to the summary of this month’s activities in the #activities channel. Include your name so that we know who the main contact is
  • Feel free to ask for help around your initiative. The more specific you are about the support you need, the faster you’ll get it.
  • If the initiative already exists and you would like to help, ask how you can support the existing initiative

How decisions are made at D+C

Decisions by committee take a long time and often result in inaction.

Design+Climate is a movement, not an organisation. It is owned by everyone.

If your common sense tells you a decision is simple and doesn’t require coordination of others, just do it!

If a decision is complex and needs input of others, it is made by a maximum of 3 people. At least one of them has relevant experience.
