INTAKE PIPE

Water is pulled from a natural source through an intake pipe

BAR SCREENS

the water passes through preliminary treatment

    • a bar screen is used to remove large debris
    • a thinner mesh screen is used to remove small debris

CHLORINE

the water is treated with an initial dose of chlorine to kill any microorganisms

FLOCCULATION TANKS

  • chemical coagulants are added, �which cause impurities in the water to clump together
  • the water-coagulant mix moves through a flocculation tank which stirs the mix to encourage the clumps to form and to clump together into bigger clumps

SEDIMENTATION TANK

  • the water is then moved into a sedimentation tank where it is allowed to sit so that the large clumps can settle out
  • the clumps are then removed and the remaining water moves on to a sand and gravel filter that removes small particles

CHLORINE – 2nd Dose

  • The water is treated with a second dose of chlorine to kill any remaining microorganisms
    • any other additives (e.g. fluoride for dental health) are added as well
  • the clean water is pumped to storage facilities and distributed
