Game Based Learning (GBL)

“Playing games to reach specific learning objectives, whether they belong to knowledge, skills, or attitudes.”

GBL usually includes a game-like environment and practice of the learning content through activities like theatre and role play. The learning process comes as a result of playing the game.

Learning methodologies that use games

Gamification

“Process of adding games or game elements to something (such as a task) so as to encourage participation and motivation”.

So-called “game elements” can be points, achievements, badges, and leaderboards. Basically, they are used as extrinsic motivational tools in traditional classroom activities.

Usually, the learning process comes as a result inserting some elements of a game into traditional activities.

Game design

“Game design is the process of creating a game from scratch, by shaping the mechanics, components, systems, and rules of a game.”
