Avoid Confusing Affect and Effect

Generally affect is used as a verb, and effect is used as a noun. Affect (verb) means “to influence or change” and effect ( noun) means “ the result.”

Verb

Example: How will your new job affect your family?

Noun

Example: What effect will moving to a new city have on your spouse’s career?

Note: Effect can also be used as a verb that means to cause or bring about. It is generally used in the following phrases: “ to effect a change” and “ to effect a plan.”

Example: The activists protested “to effect change” in regulations in climate policies.

Some Big Ideas:

Acts of betrayal can affect people differently.

When betrayed, some people seek revenge while others

do nothing.

Is seeking revenge the only option for dealing with

betrayal?

Is taking revenge… getting back at someone, worth it in the

end? What is gained by such actions?

Is it worth it to do nothing to retaliate?
