Mindset Concepts

Focus

  • LOA says “you get what you focus on”—and psychology says “yes, that’s true!”
    • Reticular Activating System (RAS)
    • There are millions of bits of information going on around you all the time. If you were aware of it all you would go crazy—in fact, you wouldn’t be able to function. It is like your computer; when you have a lot of things running at the same time it might lag and even freeze.
  • To be efficient, RAS selectively focus on ONLY the inputs that are important and relevant.
    • a) it is required for your survival or
    • b) it is a match for what your unconscious mind both believes and expects.

Focus

Remember that your mind is a command center so it is constantly looking to create what you think life should be.

This is why your statements, beliefs, and even what you visualize is so powerful, at a psychological level.

9 of 33

Thoughts

Many of us had our grandparents and parents tell us to “look at the bright side,” and keep our “chins up”. We may have heard: “It is not what happens to us that matters; it’s how we react to it”—and no matter what your beliefs, that’s the truth.

We want to balance this with learning to feel a full range of emotions, which we will talk about later

For now, at a minimum, choosing to think of life from a positive perspective will make you feel better, and that is, after all, what we all want.

10 of 33

Thoughts

There are many other studies that show happiness can:

  • Double your critical thinking skills, problem solving, and creativity
  • Boost your immune system and cardiovascular health
  • Help you live longer
  • Help you have more fulfilling and longer lasting relationships
  • Help you receive work promotions more often
  • Help you be more balanced in life
  • Help you manage stress
  • Change your perception (i.e. emotions trigger memories)

11 of 33

Expectations

As we mentioned when talking about affirmations, it takes repetition over a period of time to program our brains to integrate new beliefs.

You may be feeling optimistic about your ability to get a raise.

But, if you’ve spent your whole life believing that you you’re the underdog, your EXPECTATION of failure will be more dominant than your hopeful vibration.

Just like how repetition of new, affirming beliefs can rewire your brain, so can practicing a state of positive expectation.

Develop positive expectation by practicing finding EVIDENCE that increase your level of certainty.

12 of 33

Affirmations

Have you ever driven home from work and spaced out, and when you finally got home you could not remember how you got from point A to point B?

This autopilot happens when your unconscious mind knows the way, releasing your conscious mind from having to pay close attention.

13 of 33

Affirmations

  • The goal of positive affirmations is for them to become habituated and turn into BELIEFS
    • Possible: You must believe your affirmation is possible.
    • Power: Your affirmation must feel within the power of your control. (I will feel joy today, versus, my boss will do XYZ today)
    • Present: Write affirmations in the present tense—as if it’s happening now. Use words like “am” instead of “will”.
    • Personal: Use “I” statements and, again, keep your affirmations focused on yourself, not things outside of yourself.
    • Positive: Focus on what you DO want, not what you do NOT want.
    • Passion: The key ingredient to effective affirmations is to FEEL IT!

14 of 33

Visualization

Professional athletes and performers almost all use visualization because it works. The body does not know the difference between what is happening and what we imagine or remember.

According to research using brain imagery, visualization works because neurons in our brains, those electrically excitable cells that transmit information, interpret imagery as equivalent to a real-life action.

Emotions

Should emotions be trusted?

  • COMMON BELIEF: You should always trust your emotions.
  • COMMON BELIEF: Feelings are irrational and can’t be trusted.

They’re BOTH wrong.

Emotions and feelings are neither right nor wrong, accurate or not. Emotions are simply your body’s reaction to what you are THINKING, whether you’re thinking on purpose or not.

Your belief system and other unconscious thoughts are happening on autopilot all the time, and often cause emotions.

That’s why sometimes you have NO IDEA why you feel the way you do.

16 of 33

Processing emotions

What happened?

What is the story you made up?

What do you need?

What would you have liked to happen instead?

Is any action or conversation necessary?

Resolving story:

What is the thought?

Can I choose a more satisfying thought?

(We will do this somatically, through the body later. This is a cognitive approach.)

17 of 33

Controlling emotions

Stress responses keep us alive, so honor the fact that your emotions exist for a reason.

But often, our problems are imaginary. Or the gravity of the problem is imaginary.

It’s critical to catch negative emotions early, because negative emotions can prevent us from thinking.

You can do this with the exercise above, or somatically.

The benefit of somatic work is that you don’t have to understand or process the trigger.

Putting it together

  • Practice training focus (this is what homework is mostly on)
  • Decide on things you want (this gives you context to practice other concepts)
  • Build evidence that it is happening (this is in homework too, and trains expectation)
  • When you have negative thoughts, counteract with affirmations (going into this more Friday and next week)
  • Visualize what you want happening (maybe at the same time you collect evidence for expectation)
  • Control emotions (practicing focus helps with this too)

Beyond Financial Success

20 of 33

Results versus cause

Many of us want more financial abundance.

What is more important is not the finances, but the reason you want to change them.

21 of 33

Results versus cause

Emotional Abundance: Feeling deeply fulfilled, joyful, and at peace.

Relationships—whether with family, friends, or a partner—are key to feeling abundant. Love, connection, and support from others give life meaning and depth.

Health and Vitality: Without physical well-being, it can be difficult to enjoy or fully experience other forms of wealth.

Time Freedom: Spend your time as you wish—pursuing passions, resting, or being with loved ones.

Spiritual Abundance: Many people find that spiritual growth or connection to a higher purpose is a key aspect of abundance. Feeling connected to something greater than yourself.

Creativity and Personal Growth: Being able to create, pursue personal interests, and evolve.

Contribution and Impact: The ability to give and make a difference in the lives of others.

Beyond financial success

Success flows because of what we want.

What you want, and aligning with that energy, drives the success.

A box of money with purpose doesn’t drive the success.

(Unless you want a box of money, and never want to do anything with it!)
