About Us – A Rich Heritage That Inspires Every Celebration
The story of Briar Barns begins with Joseph and Diana English, who journeyed from London to Michigan’s wilderness in the mid-1800s, determined to build a new life. Their son, Richard English, born in London in 1843, designed and constructed our distinctive farmhouse after marrying Caroline E. French of Rockford in 1879.
The English family became central to Sparta’s history—founding a thriving logging company, contributing to the town’s development, and creating a community spirit that still welcomes guests today. Over the years, the barns transformed with Michigan’s agricultural changes, eventually serving as the Stout Dairy Farm. The larger barn—now home to your receptions—once housed cattle, echoing with the rhythms of daily farm life.
