EAL/D

English as an Additional Language or Dialect

In NSW Public Schools, more than one third of students come from a Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE). This means that a language other than English is spoken at home. The student, one or both of their parents, or another primary caregiver may use the language.

EAL/D learners may include: Overseas and Australian-born students whose first language is a language or dialect other than English, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whose first language is an Indigenous language, including traditional language, creoles and related varieties, or Aboriginal English.

The goal of EAL/D education is not just to develop students English language proficiency, but rather to support students to become bi/multilingual and promote the importance of retaining home language to support learning in English.

EAL/D teachers work in collaboration with class teachers and other specialist teachers to support EAL/D students

Health Care Plans

When students need help with health issues at school, parents may need to consult with their medical practitioner about the implications of their child's health condition for their schooling and any actions that need to occur during the school day.

An individual health care plan formalises the support for students with complex health care needs. Information from the student's medical practitioner, provided by parents, will inform the collaborative planning process.

  • We are here to support your child in getting the most out of their learning, which starts with them attending school every day.

  • If your child cannot be at school because they are sick, have a medical appointment or other reasons, please inform us immediately of their absence.

  • We are also here to help if you need support in getting your child to school.

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

  • Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
  • Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
  • Give students time to greet their friends before class
  • Reduces classroom disruption
  • Lateness is recorded when marking rolls

What is Curriculum reform?

The NSW Government is reforming the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 by 2024 so that every student is prepared and ready for their future.

The reform aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s (DoE) purpose of preparing our learners for rewarding lives as engaged citizens in a complex and dynamic society. Children, young people and adult learners are at the centre of our decision-making.

English and mathematics K-2 were the first syllabuses released by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) on 15 November 2021.
