Topic 2 Biodiversity

Classification of Living Organisms

Gr 7 Natural Sciences – Term 1, Topic 2

3 of 14

The 5 Kingdoms

  • All living things are sorted into 5 main groups called Kingdoms.
  • We sort living things into any of the 5 Kingdoms based on –
    • size;
    • whether it eats food or makes its own food;
    • ability to move or not.

The 5 Kingdoms are…

Most Monera (Bacteria)

People Protista

Find Fungi

Plants Plants

Attractive Animals

Monera (bacteria)

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

  • very small
  • unicellular without a cell nucleus
  • some are useful and help in production of

food, e.g. cheese and yoghurt)

  • some decompose dead organic material
  • others are harmful and can cause diseases

6 of 14

Protista

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

  • very small
  • unicellular with a cell nucleus
  • includes parasites, for example, the parasite that causes malaria

7 of 14

Fungi

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

Examples –

  • mushrooms,
  • mould that grows on old bread
  • the parasite that causes athlete’s

foot in humans.

Plants

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

  • trap sun’s energy: change

light energy into chemical

(food) energy.

  • provide food for animals
  • include algae e.g.

brown algae.

9 of 14

Animals

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

  • feed on plants and other

animals

  • are able to move and

search for food

10 of 14

Differences between plants and animals

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

Plants and animals differ from each other in the following processes:

  • movement
  • nutrition
  • reproduction

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

NUTRITION

Plants

  • make own food through photosynthesis

Animals

  • feed on plants and other animals

12 of 14

Differences between plants and animals.

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

MOVEMENT

Plants

  • limited
  • some plant organs grow towards the sun
  • they make seeds that are small enough to move

Animals

  • move freely – can look for food, escape enemies

Differences between plants and animals.

Gr 7 Natural Sciences - Term 1, Topic 2

REPRODUCTION

Plants

  • make seeds or
  • make spores that can blow in the wind

Animals

Male animals make sperms that swim to find female animals’ eggs.
