  1. Definition of a generator

Generator: is an electric device that converts forms of energy into electric energy.

Generators called source of electricity.

Ex: thermal power stations, nuclear reactors and dry cells.

A generator has two poles positive and negative.

  • In Generator: The current enters through the negative (-) pole and leaves through the positive (+) pole.
  • A generator is characterized by its electromotive force (e.m.f) E and its internal resistance r.
  • Representation of Generator: G( E, r)

Give the rheostat’s cursor different positions; read the indications of the voltmeter and the Ammeter and record them in a table.

Plot the graph of V as a function of I; we obtain:

We observe a straight Line of negative Slope and NOT passing through the origin.

This straight Line is called the Current – voltage Characteristic of the generator.

The equation of the St. Line is U = -kI + b; where k is slope (k=r) and b = E is constant.

 

The: characteristic of a generator are:

  • electromotive force (E).
  • The internal resistance (r).

To determine the characteristics of an active dipole X, we connect a rheostat across its terminals. A voltmeter and an ammeter are connected in the circuit to determine the voltage U across the terminals of X and intensity of the current I traversing it.

The values of U and I are given in the table below.

  1. Definition of recevires:

A Recevires: is an electric device that converts consumed the electric energy into other form of energy.

Ex: fan, heater, electrolytic cell and Lamp.

A Receiver is characterized by two quantities, its back electromotive force (back e.m.f) E’ and internal resistance r’. (E’; r’).

If we have two generators in opposition:

The generator with smaller electromotive force plays the role of a receiver.

Two generators G1 (6V, 2Ω), G2 (18V, 1Ω) are connected with a resistor of resistance R = 20Ω as shown in the adjacent figure.

  6. Calculate the voltage across R.
  7. Specify the U-I characteristic of G1
