What is plastic?
Plastic is a material made from synthetic or human-made organic compounds containing carbon. It is often made with petroleum and can come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Plastic is flexible, lightweight, and inexpensive and is used in products ranging from food and beverage packaging and foodware to electronics, construction materials, medical supplies, fishing gear, and clothing.

Most plastics will end up in the landfill or dump, just due to lack of recycling resources or improper recycling.
Plastics that are properly recycled can be brought to two locations.

At the transfer stations on Saipan and Tinian, you can drop off plastics #1 and #2.
MINA on Saipan accepts #2, #4, and #5 plastics for their community recycling program.

It is unknown how long plastic remains in the environment. Plastic has only been around for about 75 years. The plastic never truly “goes away” and degrades. It just breaks up into smaller and smaller pieces.

These microplastics are made small. An example of this is the microbeads you might see in hand sanitizer or face wash.
These microplastics are created when larger plastics break up into smaller pieces over time.
