How to Landscape with Roses

2 of 20

Overview

Course Title:

How to Landscape with Roses

Learning objective:

Learner will learn information specific to roses to care for them. The number of rose plants that must be replaced will decrease by 30% year to year as counted in September 2023, as all landscapers follow 2023 rose plants care training.

Description Text

The learners learn the conditions necessary to keep roses alive and thriving. This saves time, effort, and money so that replacing the roses are not an annual expense.

Bareroot roses have canes, a bud union, and roots. In Texas, the bud union should rest at the surface of the soil. Select each marker on the picture to learn more.

Canes/Stems: Healthy roses should have a few canes with several new buds or eyes.

Bud Union: The location where the rootstock meets the desired variety, where new canes emerge.

Roots: Healthy roots are slightly flexible, like live branches.

As the rose grows, branches, new canes, leaves, and flowers will be formed throughout the growing season.

The following articles will get further into the details of caring for roses.

What is required for a site to be appropriate for growing roses?

  1. Rest - roses require 40 days of rest per year
  2. Full sun - roses require 6+ hours of sunlight per day
  3. Heat - roses require 2000 hours of temperatures above 80°F

Which one of the answers do you need in an ideal site for roses?

  1. Soil Composition - higher organic composition helps the rose grow more leaves
  2. Water Saturation - deeper water saturation helps the rose grow longer roots
  3. Air Circulation - greater air circulation helps the rose avoid airborne pests

This lesson will discuss the 4 main steps to planting a bareroot rose.

Considerations Before Planting

Sometimes it is necessary to prune canes or roots before planting as a preventative measure. Remove unwanted parts of the plant until you reach healthy tissue.

Use shears cleaned with alcohol when pruning!

  • Remove damaged portions of canes
  • Remove diseased portions of canes
  • Remove mushy rotting roots
  • Remove dried, brittle roots

For canes, pruning cuts should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch above an outward facing bud. Make the cut at an angle sloping away from the bud. The angle prevents water from collecting and attracting fungi.

How to Plant Bareroot Roses

Bareroot roses are the easiest way to ship roses. Soak the roots for just a few hours to help them wake up.

Step 1: Dig a hole

The hole should be as wide and deep as the roots. A larger hole with rough edges should be dug in poor soils like clay and sand. Form a cone of improved soil in the bottom of the hole.

Step 2: Position the rose

The rose should be placed on the cone with the roots spread out. Spreading out the roots maximizes the area covered, improving drought tolerance. Adjust the bud union to just above the soil.

Step 3: Fill the hole

Fill the hole with improved soil and tamp down. Air pockets can dry out roots and kill them. Use water to settle. It may be necessary to adjust the bud union up or down due to settling.

Step 4: Protect the Rose

Finally, protect the rose from the cold using dirt, mulch, or leaves mounded around the canes. The materials will be used as mulch after the freezing temperatures pass.

Bareroot roses should be planted as soon as possible, once the ground thaws. Don't let them dry out, and store in a cool place. Remember to soak the roots in water right before planting.
