NOTES | CONTENT Bareroot roses have canes, a bud union, and roots. In Texas, the bud union should rest at the surface of the soil. Select each marker on the picture to learn more. Canes/Stems: Healthy roses should have a few canes with several new buds or eyes. Bud Union: The location where the rootstock meets the desired variety, where new canes emerge. Roots: Healthy roots are slightly flexible, like live branches. As the rose grows, branches, new canes, leaves, and flowers will be formed throughout the growing season. The following articles will get further into the details of caring for roses.

NOTES Pictures of 4 issues | CONTENT Use shears cleaned with alcohol when pruning!
For canes, pruning cuts should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch above an outward facing bud. Make the cut at an angle sloping away from the bud. The angle prevents water from collecting and attracting fungi.

| How to Plant Bareroot Roses Bareroot roses are the easiest way to ship roses. Soak the roots for just a few hours to help them wake up. Step 1: Dig a hole The hole should be as wide and deep as the roots. A larger hole with rough edges should be dug in poor soils like clay and sand. Form a cone of improved soil in the bottom of the hole. Step 2: Position the rose The rose should be placed on the cone with the roots spread out. Spreading out the roots maximizes the area covered, improving drought tolerance. Adjust the bud union to just above the soil. Step 3: Fill the hole Fill the hole with improved soil and tamp down. Air pockets can dry out roots and kill them. Use water to settle. It may be necessary to adjust the bud union up or down due to settling. Step 4: Protect the Rose Finally, protect the rose from the cold using dirt, mulch, or leaves mounded around the canes. The materials will be used as mulch after the freezing temperatures pass. | ||
