Program Overview:

The BOND Learning and Leadership Institute is an enrichment opportunity for male students (Grades 4-12) in Montgomery County Public Schools. This experience will develop and advance students' leadership skills as well as their personal awareness as social emotional learners.

Due to the scarcity of men of color in education, this is a unique opportunity for male centered teaching and learning for our male students. Our theory of action is if male educators provide a space for learning and leading, then education will become more accessible, engaging, and ultimately elevated as a viable career option for our male students.

Structure:

The BOND Learning and Leadership Virtual Summer Institute is a series of workshops and experiences focused on personal and social growth for male student learners.

Hip Hop SEL - Knowledge of Self

Latinos en Estados Unidos

Date: June 28 - July 2

Time: 10am - 12pm

Platform: Virtual

Grades: Rising 7th-12th

Target Population: Latino and ESOL Students

Capacity: 50 maximum

Instructors: Oliver Fajardo, Doug Jimenez

Objectives:

Exposure to culture and history of Latinos in the United States from an Immigrant and US born Latino perspective.
Explore Latino identity, advocacy, and education.
Heighten awareness of self identity
Learn transferable social emotional learning and life skills.
Learn from Latino professionals from across the United States about their experiences.

The Hero in Me!

Date: Thursday June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15

Time: 6pm - 7:30pm

Platform: Virtual

Grades: Rising 6th - 8th

Capacity: 25 maximum

Instructors: Dwayne Thomas

.The program will utilize superhero characters and storylines/common themes from comic books and movie animations to assist students with:

Comparing and contrasting adversities/obstacles (self-confidence, healthy relationships, learning, motivation) of superheroes within storylines to their own personal experiences (responding to academic challenges, inability to develop healthy relationships, struggles with self-identify and self-esteem, etc).
Identifying the appropriate staff members within the school community to assist with these challenges as the first line of help.
Comparing their strengths/attributes (intelligence, leadership, perseverance, collaborator, peacekeeper, etc.) to those found within superheroes.
Determining how those strengths/attributes can be maximized to meeting short-term and long-term goals at home, in school and the community.

Students will receive a certificate of completion for after submitting an electronic portfolio containing their work completed during the workshop.

Shades of Black�A BOND Youth Book Study

Date: Wednesday, July 7, 14, 21, and 28

Time: 6pm - 7:30pm

Platform: Virtual

Grades: Rising 4th - 12th

Capacity: 50 maximum

Instructors: Travis Payne and Ryan Summers

Objectives of the session:

Use literature to help us better understand why we are where we are as a race and culture
Identify the history of racist ideas and inspire hope for an antiracist future
Engage in discussions to “stamp” out racist thoughts in our daily lives

All students will receive a copy of the book, Stamped, for use during the sessions.

Community Agreements

Students are expected to follow MCPS general rules for student conduct and digital citizenship. The BOND Project will alert the family and student’s school of any violations of this expectation and students may be released from the BOND Virtual Institute.
