HOW

The role of renewable hydrogen

WHY

Main challenges facing Catalonia

  • Substitution of grey H2 with renewable H2
  • Decarbonization: industry, mobility, residential
  • Energy storage potential
  • Added value for renewable energy and wastes
  • Guarantee the competitiveness of major sectors
  • Adaptation of sectors and new opportunities
  • Areas of just transition (e.g. Baix Ebre - nuclear county)
  • Intraregional balance in the hydrogen era develop.

Catalonia:

250 t/day grey H2 ≈ 2.000 t/day CO2

Boost of renewables and energy integration

Chemical sector, natural gas big users, new H2-industries..

Closure of nuclear plants

HYDROGEN R&D AND MANUFACTURE

Industrial R&D Projects

Hydrogen R&D Alliance main focus

  • H2 generation at high temperature. High productivity from renewable energy and through usage of residual heat.
  • Generation of H2 and bio-methane from biogenic sources: waste to power.
  • Generation of biofuels from H2 and CO2 , and uses of H2 in the industrial and domestic sectors using fuel cells.
  • Uses of H2 in the industrial sector as a chemical agent and to reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Technical-economic studies and market launch of utility models.

Other emergent manufacturing in the hydrogen value chain:

Electrodes-stacks, hydrogen boilers, hydrogen detections sensors, hydrogen storage systems,…
