JFK-HND DOF/0219

  • The JFK-HND Event (Konbanwa Nyūyōku) is scheduled for Feb. 19 (departure on Feb. 18 local).
  • Call for clearance ASAP after 0z and aim for a 1z departure.
  • Departure
    • Expect RWY 31L at JFK, Kennedy 5 or SKORR 4 SID. After initial climb by SID, you will be vectored to GREKI.
  • Flight Level Orientation Scheme
    • In the Canadian Northern Domestic Airspace (NDA), flight levels are separated on the basis of the true track. An airspace boundary chart is attached.
    • Flight Level Orientation Schedules for event route:
      • Before 55N/077W: Odd (FL350, FL330 etc.)

After 55N/077W: Even (FL340, FL360 etc.)

Polar Communications

  • Edmonton Radio (CZEG_FSS) and Anchorage Arctic FIR (PAZN) control polar airspaces crossed by our route. A limited number of VHF remote communication outlets are scattered around the Canadian High Arctic region (VHF Coverage Chart attached).
  • This is simulated on VATSIM upon the introduction of Audio for VATSIM (AfV). The locations of VHF transceivers (within the NDA) of interest to our flight are listed below:
    • CORAL HARBOUR, TALOYOAK, CAMBRIDGE BAY, RESOLUTE BAY, SACHS HARBOUR
  • Beyond VHF coverage, CPDLC is used. On the 141-degree west Edmonton/Anchorage Arctic FIR boundary (AGMIF), position reporting is relayed through Gander HF Radio (NAT-D frequencies). On the Anchorage Arctic/Magadan Oceanic boundary reporting is done through the Magadan HF Radio. Iceland Radio also has HF capabilities in PAZN.

ETOPS and Polar Operations

  • The route is rated ETOPS-120 for most twin-engine aircraft, with the following ETOPS adequate airports:
    • CYVO Val-d’Or
    • CYFB Iqaluit
    • CYZF Yellowknife
    • PABR Utqiagvik/Barrow *
      • Limited runway length.
    • PAFA Fairbanks
    • UHMP Pevek *
      • Limited weather information.
    • UHMA Anadyr
  • Maximum diversion distance: 748nmi
  • Under certain scenarios the route may enter and exit ETOPS for up to 3 times.
    • Segment 1: CYVO/CYFB
    • Segment 2: CYFB/CYZF/PABR
    • Segment 3: PABR/UHMA
  • CFR § 121.97(b)(1)(ii) Public protection.
    • “After February 15, 2008, for ETOPS beyond 180 minutes or operations in the North Polar area and South Polar area, this includes facilities at each airport or in the immediate area sufficient to protect the passengers from the elements and to see to their welfare.”
    • Not required for ETOPS-120?
