President’s Message

We have seen a sudden increase in the COVID cases in Union County. There are many factors contributing to this, but needless to say, it has caused concern about guild meetings. For the near future, we are going to ask all members to wear masks and to respect social distancing. Understand that the situation is fluid, but currently, the First United Methodist Church and the Civic center are still open for our use. We will keep in contact with the different facilities, and let you know of any changes.

At this time, we will continue with our meetings, the outreach workshops, and the Tuesday Stitch and Chat as scheduled. All facilities are large enough to spread out and still have interaction with other guild members.

In this trying time, I would like to thank the guild members that have contacted me and expressed their thoughts. I hope every member feels comfortable that they can discuss guild issues with me.

Thank you,

Tim Strike (strike.tim@gmail.com)

September Meeting Program - Revised - All About Feet!

Vickie Clontz had to cancel her appearance, and our intrepid program chair, Susan Slaton has found another great speaker!

Our September speaker is Jennie Priven. Jennie was a Bernina ambassador, and has vast knowledge of all aspects of sewing and quilting. She is going to talk about the feet you can use (for any type of machine) to enhance your quilting and sew out embellishments on them. She is bringing many different feet for you to look at up close, as well as explain what each foot can do.

September Meeting and Workshop with Vickie Clontz

From Program Chair, Susan Slaton: We are getting back to normal and it is time to be thinking about taking a class! In September, we will host Vickie Clontz from North Carolina.

Vickie’s love of fibers, wool, and folk art are apparent in each of the 100+ patterns she has designed for her company, Annie’s Keepsakes, celebrating their 30-year anniversary in 2020!

On Tuesday, September 28, we’ll be treated to Vickie’s lecture, A Walk on the Wool Side. It’s a powerpoint program/lecture with a concentration on how to use wool in quilting and sewing projects, from traditional blanket-stitched applique to needle-felted art quilts. She will also bring samples to correspond with the slide show, which serves to inspire attendees to try their hand at using wool in their creative designs. She will have patterns, kits, and wool felt for many of the projects.

In the class on Thursday, Vickie will guide us in the art of wool applique where students will create a variety of dimensional hand-dyed wool felt flowers to embellish this beautiful 15” wall hanging. We’ll also learn several hand embroidery stitches to enhance their project. Kits will be available. Her website is https://www.annieskeepsakes.com/ .

Contact Susan Slaton to sign up for the workshop (wazoo4u@gmail.com) Cost for the class will be $35. Let’s make a good showing and come out for our first class back together!

Our August Meeting Program...

Lauren Lancaster, a certified occupational therapist with Benchmark Physical Therapy, and an accomplished quilter, spoke at the August on the topic, “Healthy Tips for Every Quilter: Joint Protection, Energy Conservation, Ergonomics, Adaptations and More.” She and her associate, Shelby Lee, also an occupational therapist, demonstrated a wide variety of exercises and strategies to help quilters prevent and avoid injuries, arthritis pain, back and leg aches and the effects of aging.

Ms. Lancaster addressed issues from “head to toe.” She pointed out that at age 60, you require 70% more light than you needed at age 30, so older quilters will need extra lighting at their work areas, and that you can avoid elbow and wrist stress by ensuring that your sewing surface puts your hands about four inches below your elbow level. She also demonstrated various types of scissors, rotary cutters and compression gloves that make cutting and sewing easier on arthritic hands, and showed exercises to improve posture and upper body flexibility. For the lower body, the chair at your sewing machine should not have a hard front edge, which diminishes circulation to your legs and feet.

Much of her information comes from the book, RX for Quilters, by Susan Delaney Mech, MD, ©2000
