INTRODUCTION

The marching band is the only ensemble large enough to bring together all band members and their families. It is also our most public group, performing for thousands each year. It provides unique opportunities for leadership, personal growth, and collaboration among students, parents, and teachers outside the classroom.

BAND PARENTS MEETING DAVIS HIGH

Why Are You Here?

  • Build upon past success
  • Help families make informed decisions
  • Have fun and be inspired for the show and recruit others
  • Meet students/parents and future best friends for life

PARENTS: WE NEED YOU!

WHY BE INVOLVED?

  • The most valuable thing you can give is your time. Your kids will feel more loved by seeing you involved.
  • Helps keep costs lower as things like Davis Cup subsidize cost
  • Parents directly impact our success. Successful band programs have successful parent organizations. You need to expect to be involved.
  • Your skills, time, talents will elevate the program and inspire our students
  • Making parent friendships can be a powerful way for you to connect with our school
  • You will gain empathy and understanding by working with teachers
  • In your marching band registration parents will indicate how they intend to help. Be there when your student registers! If you have specific skills are ways you’d like to be involved please let us know!

*Disclaimer*

KJH is building a supplemental gym space west of the building. This is good news and is very needed! However, it’s unclear how much their construction will impact us. Much of this will depend on the timing of their construction which is often fluid. Please be understanding as we figure this out and adjust to circumstances outside our control.

SOME POLICIES FOR CONSIDERATION

Students must meet UHSAA eligibility requirements: a 2.0 GPA, no more than one F, and no U’s in citizenship.

1st term eligibility is based on 4th term grades

Students in 9th grade and up may participate in the fall season. Students do not participate in fall only, though a small number choose to perform in summer parades only. Fundamentals are taught during the summer.

Absences: We understand that summer conflicts arise; please plan trips during scheduled breaks when possible. Fall absences especially impact the group’s progress and students who are unprepared to perform may be asked not to.

MORE THINGS FOR CONSIDERATION

A quality synthetic reed can save woodwind players money over time. While the upfront cost is higher, it lasts longer and reduces replacement expenses.

All marching band members should be enrolled in a school performing ensemble. For most students this is band, but choir, orchestra, theater, and color guard also qualify.

Color guard members should enroll in the Color Guard class. The class is most effective when all members participate.

FINANCIAL COSTS

It takes a lot of resources to run a marching program and we carry the entire load ourselves with no district financial support.

The financials breakdown is the most a student in the program could expect to pay but some students will pay less if they do not need some apparel or instrument needs.

At least one fundraising opportunity will be available for students to participate in to raise funds for their own dues. Some program fundraisers (like Taco Time for example) help cover things not paid by student fees like semi transportation

21 of 32

Optional proposed extension to Disneyland

After our state championships and regional performances, we are proposing an optional Disneyland extension. Students not participating can take a bus back to Kaysville.

This extension requires parent approval and at least 80% support. Voting in favor does not commit your student to attend, but not voting will count as a “no.”

Itinerary and Cost Breakdown

These are preliminary estimates based on numbers we don’t yet know. With triple occupancy, the cost is about $1,316 per student, covering transportation, meals, park admission, workshops, and hotel.

Chaperone costs will vary depending on room occupancy. I can provide more details if we decide to move forward.

I’d like to take an informal poll to see if there is enough interest to pursue the trip. A QR code to a short anonymous survey will be on the final slide, and I would appreciate your feedback.

24 of 32

Fundraising Opportunities

We can offer individual fundraising options such as Fiiz or Swig cards (students make $10 for each of these they sell) or Little Caesars cards or Vanilla.

Program wide events like a “text a thon” can only be applied to the students equally per district policy

We would LOVE to have some corporate sponsors for the band if you have any connections here please let Mr. Crookston know!

Fundraisers can take a lot of time to run- if you want fundrais we need parents willing to help with that.
