Minnesota Dairy
Milk comes from dairy cows. A cow is a female animal that has had a baby (calf). She only provides milk after she has had a calf. Boys/male animals do not produce milk.
Dairy cows are raised on farms. Dairy farmers provide the cows with feed (grass, grain and hay) and water. The cows produce milk everyday so the farmers collect this milk.

Milking begins when a cow enters a milking parlor or in some cases, their stall. Cows are milked two or three times a day. Each cow can produce 30 to 80 pounds of milk each day!

Milk trucks transport milk from dairy farms to milk processing plants. The milk truck keeps the milk temperature around 34 degrees so it does not spoil.

At the milk processing plant, milk is heated to kill any harmful germs and it is tested to make sure the milk is safe and healthy to drink.
