OUR STORY:

Change. Variation. Capricious.

Most people fear change, however, we have come to learn that life favours the ones who are not scared of it. What do stars and humans have in common? A passionate fuel that has the potential to burn bright?

Yes. But also the fact that some days might be brighter or dimmer than the previous. Our team aims to connect the poetic form of human emotions, with the literal lustrousness of a star.

Inspired by our own personal struggles, where we were once afraid of change and sought comfort in our own bubble, we are sure that a majority of the youth can also relate to it. You might also have related to this at some point in your life. Just imagine the amount of self-fulfilment or potential that could be lost. Therefore we aim to solve, this major and current obstacle.

As per our research, we found out that humans love to define themselves, to be understood. This is why we see so many people take pride in Personality Types, Zodiac Signs and Hogwarts Houses. However, we want to create that connection with something more tangible. Something that will inspire them to explore astronomy.

Welcome to Celestial Companion,

an app that allows you to connect with your Soul Star.

• This app assigns you a Soul Star, a star that shares your birthday. To aid in that feeling of connection.
• Where you will get daily updates on the brightness of your star. Whether today your star maybe dimmer or brighter than the previous day.
• Emotes of Human Feelings personify your star, which shows emotions like happiness, anticipation, sadness and despondence based on the brightness of the star. To normalize that everyday we can feel different emotions. To rid the world of toxic positivity.
• An additional quote of the day will be added, to help motivate people and make them realise that they are not alone.

However, with Celestial Companion, we wanted to go above and beyond, not to be a One- Dimensional App. So what is different you might ask?

There are 5 different major elements/features.

• Curiosity [Learning Portal]

• Homepage consists of your Soul Star, a graph showing the variability in your star’s brightness over time, which corresponds to your Soul Star’s emotes.

• Opportunity [Social] is the chatroom element which has three main sections: Astronomical Events, Local MeetUps Near You, and Mental Health Chatroom. It gives an opportunity to connect.

​

• Look Up makes use of built-in gyroscopes and GPS/Cellular WiFi which helps you to identify your Soul Star In the Night Sky.

​

• Time Travel allows you to virtually travel back in time to see how the night sky appeared on your Birthday or another specific date in which the data can support (oldest data possible). This makes use of a dial to show a satisfying transition. It also displays the most notable differences in brightness of different stars compared to today. It also shows how much brighter/dimmer your Soul Star is compared with today’s data.

• Curiosity [Learning Portal] supplies the user with information on Star Variability and asks a daily question, where you can earn points if you answer it accurately. Points will be displayed on the user’s profile, to add a gamification element. It incites curiosity to learn in the user.

• Additionally, a widget will be made for both iOS and Android. A portal for Consumer Feedback will also be made available.

- Astronomical events show you whether a supermoon, an eclipse, a meteor shower, etc. will occur within the next week.

- Local MeetUps Near You is a chatroom to help connect people within your region to go stargazing, to view the upcoming Astronomical event, or to view your own Soul Star.

- Mental Health Chatroom is a platform for support to help people realise that they are not alone. To normalise conversing about mental health.

- All chatrooms will be moderated to ensure that no harmful or hate speech is vocalised.

• Encourages meeting new people in person which aids to bridge the social development gap caused by Covid-19; transferring the communication from digital to physical.
• Engages the community as Consumer Feedback or New Ideas are always taken into account.

• Connects people from all over the world, whether they had a pre-existing interest in astronomy or not.
• While also creating a generation that is more receptive to the ideas of well-being.

• Informs people on Star Variability.
• Incorporates astronomy into the lives of the general public on a daily basis.
• Raises the newer generation with an optimistic outlook towards mental health as change is portrayed as a positive.

What Happens Next?

Once the app is fully running, without any bugs, we will create Celestial Companion Physical MeetUp Spots internationally, with the aid of the community. These spots stay consistent and act as a hub for more socialisation.

1. PHYSICAL MEETUP SPOTS

Improve the accuracy of the data while working with NASA’s Bright Target Explorer (BRITE), The Microvariability and Oscillation of Stars (MOST) Space Telescope with the Canadian Space Agency. Rather than just working with the European Space Agency and NASA.

2) USE DATA FROM DIFFERENT SPACE AGENCIES

Surveys and feedback from users will be taken into account.
