Wildcat Families,

Old Kentucky Home Middle School is HOME to approximately 390 6th-8th grade student LEADers and 45 adult LEADers. We are centrally located in Bardstown, Kentucky and have been a part of the Nelson County community since 1968. We take PRIDE in fostering a sense of belonging, community centered learning and gift Xcavation.

Our Wildcats begin each morning with free breakfast in small, gender-based groups across grade levels. Students join their LEADer to build deep relationships to CREATE a sense of connection and belonging every single day during Care and Connect. We prioritize social-emotional wellness, personal growth and some friendly competition in our time together. Each Care and Connect BELONGS to a larger community that we call our House System. Our students created three houses: Spalding, Moore and Talbott a couple years ago, and they remain the foundation to our culture of CARE.

Our day continues centered around community Xperiences that are rich in literacy and purpose. We embrace our LEAD values: Lean into Learning, Engage the Community, Affirm Self and Others and Dare to go the Distance as standards of Xcellence to ensure personal achievement. We hold ourselves and one another to high standards to EMPOWER our community.

Before the day is over, our Wildcats will CONNECT in two electives that will allow them to Xplore their individual passions. Our LEADers and LEARNers grow together to Xcavate the gifts of each other. Instruments, Art, Leadership, STEM, Agriculture, Choir, Athletics along with many other options provides additional opportunities for our students to collaborate around a common purpose with an adult that also shares this interest. Building strong connections through learning is our priority!

SHIRTS:

Types: NCS/OKH Spirit Shirt (without hoods); Polo Shirt (with fold-down collar); Dress Shirt (with fold-down collar)

• All shirts must have sleeves.
• If a spirit shirt is NOT the top/exposed shirt, a collar must be worn.
• Cowl necks are not permitted.
• The midriff should not be exposed at any time.
• ½ & ¹/4 zip pullovers with a fold down collar are permitted.
• Buttons should be buttoned to neck line (bottom of collar bone).
• Non-spirit wear T-shirts over collared shirts are not permitted.
• Mock turtlenecks are not permitted unless under a collared shirt

SWEATSHIRTS, SWEATERS, VESTS:

​

• All non-spirit wear sweatshirts, sweaters, and vests must be worn with fold down collar shirts or full turtlenecks underneath.
• Collars must be showing outside of a non-spirit wear sweater/sweatshirt/vest
• Lightweight full zip jackets must have a visible collar shirt or spirit shirt underneath
• If a student wears a scarf, the collar of their shirt must still be visible.
• Hoods of any kind on any garment are not permitted. This includes coats, jackets, windbreakers, etc.
• Blankets are not permitted in the school building.

PANTS, SHORTS, OVERALLS:

Types: Twill, chino, corduroy, denim or jean with plain or pleated front.

• Pants and shorts may be solid or print.
• Sweatpants, nylon jogging pants, yoga pants, leggings, and pajama pants are not permitted.
• Sagging is not permitted.
• Overalls must be worn with shirts that have sleeves and a collar or a spirit shirt.
• Shorts must extend to the top of the knee area when standing.

SKIRTS, DRESSES, JUMPERS:

Types: Any color and fabric except no spandex/lycra or stretch material

• Must meet or extend to the knee.
• Shorts may be worn under the dress, skirt or jumper, but may not extend below the hem.
• Dresses must have sleeves and backs. Jumpers must be worn with shirts that have sleeves.

At OKHMS, part of taking care of yourself, others, and our school means we consistently uphold the school dress-code in order to assist students in developing a professional workforce attitude. To that end, our dress code expectations begin immediately upon entering the building.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS AND FURTHER CLARIFICATIONS:

Clothing must NOT have holes and tears, or the APPEARANCE of holes and tears, of any kind

• Any apparel or appearance (including but not limited to hair, jewelry, make-up ,etc.) that calls attention to itself will be responded to as deemed necessary.
• Students may not carry or wear anything that advertises drugs, alcohol, tobacco products or anything that promotes or suggests lewd, dangerous, discriminatory, or unacceptable messages.
• Dress code bottoms must be worn on all days at all schools
• The administration has the final authority in determining appropriate school attire and appearance to provide a socially and emotionally safe learning environment for all students.

MASKS FOR IN PERSON SCHOOL: If/When masks are required by health department/CDC guidance for in person school:

• Masks should fit around and seal the nose and mouth.
• Masks that call attention will be responded to as necessary. Masks should not advertise drugs, alcohol, tobacco or anything that promotes or suggests lewd, dangerous, discriminatory or unacceptable messages.

CARE & CONNECT CELEBRATIONS - Our first Family Friday each year is a celebration of each Care & ConneX name, symbol, chant, enthusiasm, etc. Care & ConneX compete by house to show the most spirit with cheers, dances, chants, signs, and so on. The most spirited, as judged by OKH Caretakers, wins the first spirit stick of the year in their house. Let the games begin!

WELCOME HOME SOCIAL - With the start of each new school year, we know our Wildcats want to spend time with their friends. So, on the first Friday back to school, students stay after to snack, socialize, dance, play games, and simply enjoy reconnecting with their friends and their LEADers. The NRG is tangible. You Belong Here!

Quarter One:

Annual Rituals & Traditions

QUARTER ONE LEAD RALLY -

For this annual tradition, the whole school comes together to celebrate our LEAD core values and student achievement. Houses complete all quarter to be awarded the L, E, A, D based on attendance, grades, behavior, and achievement. There’s also lots of games to play to compete for the coveted House Trophy!

FALL RUSH - This annual tradition is a time for student organizations and athletics to recruit new members and connect with current members. All students participate in Xploring the variety of clubs and organizations OKH has to offer through their Care & ConneX and then join RUSH to sign up for their interests. We highly encourage all students to Xplore at least one club, organization, or sport to enhance and grow their LEADership abilities.

FAMILY REUNION - Each year, right before the start of school, all Care and ConneX LEADers meet with families individually to learn more about your Wildcats, share a bit about themselves, and to create a connection with which parents, Wildcats, and LEADers feel confident connecting with one another to share concerns or celebration. Welcome Home Wildcats!

HALLOWEEN DANCE - This tradition is definitely a Wildcat favorite. On the Friday before Halloween, students get to dress in costume and dance, dance, dance. This event takes place after school so students go home and dress in the cutest and spookiest. There is always plenty of food, dancing & laughing to go around. A house attendance and costume competition is a traditional must! Boo!

NICE PRIDE GAMES - Each fall Nelson County High School plays Thomas Nelson High School in the NCS PRIDE Bowl. We make a week of it at OKH. Students and LEADers compete against all other schools in the district to take home the NCS PRIDE trophy. This week also includes a spirit week competition for houses to earn points as Wildcats and LEADers dress up each day to show their support and PRIDE in the Nelson County Schools. WELCOME HOME GATHERING - Within the first week of school, each grade level will come together to learn a bit more about the houses, our LEAD values, the OKH culture and for a little house competition. This gathering is intended to promote school spirit, acclimate or re-acclimate students to OKH, and start a little healthy competition for the year.

7 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS - Our 7 Days of Christmas is fun, fun, fun! Each day is filled with great Christmas activities that bring into focus the spirit of the season. From tacky door decorating to specialized Care 7 Connect lessons to gifting others unexpectedly, OKH truly shines with Christmas Spirit during this time.

BAND & CHOIR WINTER CONCERT

Each holiday season, our band and choir prepare and present a festive celebration of music for families, community, and fellow Wildcats. It always proves to be a highlight of the Christmas season as our musicians take great pride in presenting their skills to a cheerful audience.

Quarter Two:

Annual Rituals & Traditions

HOUSE/CARE & CONNECT PHOTOS - Just before Christmas break, we gift each student with a house tshirt. We invite students to wear these shirts for group photos in the gym just before break. We photograph each house as well as each individual Care & Connect. Photos are then developed, framed, and hung in the hallway before students return in January.

VETERANS DAY PROGRAM - Each year, our Wildcats host local Veterans to our school for a celebration of their service to our country. The celebration usually occurs in the gym with musical performances from our band and choir. Due to Covid, the 2021 celebration was a video created by students featuring Veteran reflections, musical celebrations, & Wildcat thank yous.

2ND QUARTER LEAD RALLY- For this annual tradition, the whole school comes together to celebrate our LEAD core values and student achievement. Houses complete all quarter to be awarded the L, E, A, D based on attendance, grades, behavior, and achievement. There’s also lots of games to play to compete for the coveted House Trophy!

WINTER DANCE - At the end of Quarter 2, we host a Winter Dance in the gymnasium. This semi-formal event is the social event of the winter for students. The dance is open to all 6th-8th grade students.

FEAST OF THANKS - In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we dine with our Houses to give thanks. Wildcats feast with their Care & Connect in our Architex-decorated cafeteria. In addition to a delicious meal, each house rotates through the gym to play festive games and continue celebration.

DEAN’S LIST BREAKFAST FOR Q! - Families are invited to join with us in celebrating our Wildcats who have achieved all A’s and/or B’s for the third quarter. At this event, families will hear speeches from some of our Wildcat LEADers and have the opportunity to see their wildcat(s) receive their Dean’s List Certificates. We also have a special menu with student requests of their favorite breakfast items. Parents of Dean’s List members will receive a personalized invitation in the mail.

SPRING RUSH WITH INCOMING 6TH GRADERS - This annual tradition is a time for our incoming 6th graders to learn about opportunities to join student organizations and athletic teams. Current Wildcats mentor incoming Wildcats in Xploring the variety of clubs and organizations OKH has to offer. We highly encourage all students to Xplore at least one club, organization, or sport to enhance and grow their LEADership abilities.

FAMILY REUNION - Each year, right before the start of the second semester, all Care and ConneX LEADers meet with families individually for a second time. This Family Reunion is very special because WILDCATS LEAD! Each wildcat will lead his/her family through their Digital Blueprint to share and celebrate their first semester projects and accomplishments. Gooooo Wildcats!

8TH GRADE DANCE - Our 8th graders will celebrate their time together with one last middle school dance. It’s a time for them to cut loose and enjoy their peers in what is sure to be a lifelong memory as they dance the night away. The dance is the Friday evening before promotion.

PASSING THE TORCH & FAREWELL WALK - Our 8th grade students will leave their legacy in the passing the torch ceremony. This

tradition began in

the spring of

2021 where our

Wildcats pass on

their leadership,

pride, and memories to our 7th grade students.

8TH GRADE PICNIC - 8th grade students will enjoy a day of friendship and fellowship two days before their promotion ceremony. They will enjoy bouncies, yard games, grilled lunch, snacks, and drinks.

8TH GRADE BREAKFAST - Come hungry as we celebrate your last middle school day in big way with a big breakfast. Students will come together to share a meal and prepare for our 8th grade promotion ceremony.

SIXTH/SEVENTH GRADE FUN IN THE SUN PICNIC

- While 8th grade Wildcats are being promoted, 6th and 7th grade Wildcats enjoy bouncies and backyard games, as well as sack picnic lunches on the last day of school.

Each of the above high volume transition times have a specific protocol. In each case, students are monitored and/or escorted by LEAD Learners to ensure the safest environment for your child and their achievement at OKHMS. Ask your child about their experiences in each of these instances.

Distractors of Learning

Items of this nature are distractors to students, their peers, and their LEAD Learners in the educational environment. At times, these items may also be a safety hazard. For these reasons, students must place these types of items in their lockers at the start of the day. These items need to remain in lockers until dismissal. Failure to follow this expectation will result in student consequences.

NON-TRADITIONAL INSTRUCTION

In the case of an NTI day:

Step 1: District Announces “NTI Day”.

Step 2: Log into Google Meet for Care & ConneX at 8:20 to get all the information you need for the day.

Step 3: Students complete work at home through Google Meets, Google Classrooms, Teacher Sites & contact teachers for support.

You can find the ‘Virtual’ NTI schedule below.

• Death or severe illness in the student’s immediate family
• Illness of the pupil (See parent notes)
• Medical, dental, or legal appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of school hours. (Times and dates shall be verified by the health professional or court officials) Students will be excused for a partial day absence only, unless the doctor or court specifically writes on the note that the student was required to be out of school all day.
• Religious holidays and practices
• One day for attendance at the Kentucky State Fair (per state law). (Proof of attendance must be provided)
• Two visits to colleges or universities
• Drivers test for permit or license. (A half (1/2) day may be allowed twice during the school year)
• One day for students with lice.- If the student is sent home, he/she will be excused for the remainder of that day
• Documented military leave
• One day prior to departure of parent/guardian called to active military duty
• One day upon the return of parent/guardian from active military duty
• Ten days for students attending basic training required by a branch of the United States Armed Forces; or Visitation for up to ten (10) days with the student’s parent, de facto custodian, or person with legal custody who, while on active military duty stationed outside of the country, is granted rest and recuperation leave
• Educational Enhancement Opportunities (see next slide)

WHAT IS EXCUSED?

Upon returning to school following an absence or tardy, a student has three (3) school days to turn in a note to the attendance office.

The note must be a signed and dated parent note, physician statement or court statement explaining the reason for every day the student was absent or tardy and a return to school date.

If a written statement verifying a valid reason for each day of absence or tardy is not received within three (3) schools days after the student returns to school, the absence or tardy will be recorded as unexcused.

Students in 6th-12th grades receive TWO parent notes per semester.

Students in K-5 receive FOUR parent notes per semester

Pupils are required to attend regularly and punctually the school in which they are enrolled. Recording of absences and tardies shall be made in compliance with the requirements of 702 KAR 007:125.¹

COLLECTION OF NOTES

Any student who has attained the age of six (6), but has not reached his/her eighteenth (18^th) birthday, who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three (3) days or more, or tardy without valid excuse on three (3) days or more, is a truant. Any student enrolled in a public school who has attained the age of eighteen (18) years, but has not reached his/her twenty-first (21^st) birthday, who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three (3) or more days, or tardy without valid excuse on three (3) or more days, is a truant. A student who has been reported as a truant two (2) or more times is an habitual truant. The class attendance requirements stated below do not in any way supersede or change the compulsory school attendance laws stated in KRS 159.010. When a student is declared a habitual truant, the parent may be notified by a certified letter and/or by a personal visit. If truancy continues, both parent(s) and student may be required to attend the Truancy Mediation Program. As a final recourse, court proceeding will be instituted if truancy continues.

TRUANCY DEFINED

School bus transportation is authorized for students regularly enrolled in a public school in all grades. Nelson County provides school bus transportation within the county and is available to all students in grades preschool through 12th. School bus transportation is not a required service under state statute or regulations. Nelson County provides transportation to and from school as a courtesy to the parents and students in the district. Therefore, all students are expected to comply with all state regulations (702 KAR 5:090) and all Board of Education regulations, policies and procedures, in order to continue to enjoy this privilege.

Accommodations and supports will be provided in accordance with 707 KAR 1:270-1:380 for eligible students.

Student safety while in transit is a priority for our transportation team. Violations will be handled seriously due to the potential risk to lives while in transit.

• Be on time. Be at the bus stop five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
• Always cross in front of the bus and at a safe distance in front of the bus in order to be seen by the bus driver’s signal.
• Do not run toward or run across the street in front of a school bus while it is in motion.
• Never stand in the road while waiting for the bus. Wait in an orderly line off-highway or street. Wait until the bus stops, watch for the driver’s signal and then walk to the door and board the bus in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove.

AT THE BUS STOP

• Students shall comply with district posted bus rules: Observe the same conduct as in the classroom, be courteous, use no profane language, do not eat or drink on the bus, keep the bus clean, cooperate with the driver, do not be destructive, stay in your seat, keep head hands and feet inside the bus, & bus driver is authorized to assign seats.
• Students shall comply immediately with the driver’s/monitor’s instructions.
• Students shall respect all others on the bus.
• Students, while riding the bus, are subject to the same conduct conditions that exist in the classroom.
• Students shall only ride on their assigned bus and exit the bus at their designated stop.
• Students are expected to share seating space.
• Students shall not bring unapproved items on the bus. Any carry-on items should be able to be placed in a student’s lap.
• Students shall not vandalize or damage any property. Restitution will be made and they will be disciplined according to the discipline procedure.
• Students shall not use profanity or participate in yelling or screaming.
• Students will be subject to removal from the bus should their actions endanger the safe operations of the bus or the wellbeing of others.
• Driver may assign seats to students.
• Students may sit up to 3 per seat due to bus capacity.

WHILE RIDING THE BUS

• Students shall not participate in any activity that contributes to the unsafe operation of the bus.
• Students shall not block emergency exits with any item.
• Students will not take on a position of supervision over other students at any time unless they are approved by the board of education as a monitor. In the case of an emergency; however, an appointed student will fill this role in the driver’s absence.
• All students are entitled to “due process” regarding disciplinary actions taken against them.

WHILE RIDING THE BUS (cont.)

• Passengers are permitted to leave the bus only at the regular designated stop. Any change must be made with the parent’s request in writing and approved by the signature of the school principal.
• If a student lives on the opposite side of the road from the bus stop, the student should to the front of the bus and wait until the driver gives the signal to cross the road. Never cross the road in the rear of a stopped school bus.

BUS TRIP HOME

• Parents should see that their children are at the bus stop five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
• Parents should emphasize to their students the need to observe extreme caution when approaching bus stops, moving buses, or stopped buses.
• Parents should emphasize the importance of observing all safety and conduct regulations established for the safe and efficient operation of the school bus.
• Parents should report any misconduct on school buses to the building principal.

Bus Transfer Locations: Students are expected to follow the same expectations at bus transfer locations. When students are at the bus transfer location, administrators at the connecting school reserve the right to give directions and disciplinary measures.

The school principal may decide additional consequences for bus misbehavior not limited to bus suspension.

The Nelson County School District utilizes 1:1 Chromebooks in an effort to better prepare each student to become an Inspired Learner. Upon fulfilling district and school 1:1 policy, these students will be permitted to take their Chromebooks home for instructional purposes with parental consent. Remember that Chromebooks are the property of Nelson County Schools and their content may be accessed/viewed at any time.

USERS MUST:

• Maintain control of their assigned Chromebook at all times unless otherwise directed by administration or other appropriate school/district personnel.
• Keep Chromebook free from exposure to food, drink, weather, and/or other potentially harmful elements.
• Use only included Chromebook charger and standard electrical outlet to charge the device.
• Ensure hands are clean prior to using the Chromebook
• Use only a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the screen.
• Report software and/or hardware issues to the Tech Help Desk as soon as possible.
• Ensure that the device is adequately charged for school use daily.

USERS MUST NOT:

• Modify Chromebooks in any way, unless directed by authorized school personnel. I.e. stickers, tape, decals
• Modify asset tag in any way
• Allow heavy objects to be placed/ stored upon Chromebook.
• Exchange or loan Chromebook with/ to any party at any time
• Display or transmit offensive material, messages, and/or images

Device Types: For the purpose of this program, the word “devices” will include: laptops, eReaders, iPads, and tablets. Please note that cell phones, smart phones, cellular enabled devices, iPods, gaming devices, etc., with Internet access are not permissible for use during the school day.

GUIDELINES:

1. Students and parents/guardians participating in B.Y.O.T. must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, Student Handbook, Acceptable Use Policy, and all Board policies, particularly Internet Acceptable Use.
2. Devices may not be used to cheat on assignments or tests or for non-instructional purposes (such as making personal phone calls and text/instant messaging).
3. Devices that have cellular capabilities may not be used to call, text, message, etc. during school hours.
4. Students may not use devices to record, transmit, or post photographic images or video of a person or persons on campus during school activities and/or hours, unless otherwise allowed by a teacher and the person being recorded.
5. Devices may only be used to access files on computer or Internet sites which are relevant to the classroom curriculum. Games are not permitted, unless otherwise allowed by a teacher.
6. The school's network filters will be applied to a device’s connection to the Internet and any attempt to bypass the network filters is prohibited.

STUDENTS SHALL NOT:

1. Bring a device on premises that infects the network with a Virus, Trojan, or program designed to damage, alter, destroy, or provide access to unauthorized data or information.
2. Process or access information on school property related to “hacking”, altering, or bypassing network security policies.
3. OKHMS is authorized to collect and examine any device that is suspected of causing technology problems or that was the source of an attack or virus infection.
4. Printing from personal laptops or devices will not be possible at school
5. Personal devices must be charged prior to school and run on battery power while at school.

LOST, STOLEN, DAMAGED DEVICES:

Each user is responsible for his/her own digital property and should treat it and use it responsibly and appropriately; OKHMS takes no responsibility for stolen, lost, or damaged devices, including lost or corrupted data on those devices. While school employees will help students identify how to keep personal devices secure, students will have the final responsibility for securing their personal devices. Please check with your homeowner's policy regarding coverage of personal electronic devices, as many insurance policies can cover loss or damage.

USAGE CHARGES:

OKHMS cannot be held responsible for any possible device charges to your account that might be incurred during approved school-related use.

OKHMS uses Instructional Technology as one way of enhancing the mission to teach the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students will need as responsible citizens in the global community. OKHMS allows personal devices on our network and school grounds for students who follow the responsibilities stated in the Acceptable Use Policy and the attached guidelines regarding B.Y.O.T. provides technology that is appropriate and relevant to support instructional purposes. The use of personal devices by students is optional, students who do not participate in B.Y.O.T. will not be penalized, and alternative modes of participation will be available.

Our community requires that we not only engage in meaningful conversation in person, but we also utilize the same principles with digital/ telecommunication avenues such as text, email, and social media.

If telecommunication that is harassing in nature takes place away from school property and or disrupts the educational process, schools reserve the right to use disciplinary measures.

When a level one infraction occurs, the student will complete a Rewind Form and be assigned to the Rewind Lab (lunch detention) for the next school day. The student does NOT go to the office for this level infraction.

• The student will retrieve the form and complete all parts, providing careful thought and consideration in the reflection. It is important for students to describe the behavior in detail. We want students to be active and productive members of our community and be able to reflect on and own their choices.
• Students will return the form to the LEAD Learner to review and sign. The LEAD Learner will sign the form if the student has thoughtfully and completely filled in the form, leaving no parts blanks. LEAD Learner disapproval of completion will result in the student revising or rewriting. Should the student refuse to comply with completing the form properly, the behavior becomes a level two infraction. The behavior will then be documented in Infinite Campus as a behavior referral and the student will be assigned a Saturday School.
• One copy of the Rewind Form will go home with the student to be signed by a parent and returned to the Rewind Leader during Rewind Lab the following day. Failure to return the form, signed by a parent, results in a second lunch detention. Failure to return the form, signed by a parent, for two consecutive days results in a Saturday school assignment.
• The second copy of the form is submitted to the office to be documented in Infinite Campus.

Lunch Rewind Lab

Students are required to bring their signed Rewind Forms with them to Rewind Lab. Failure to return their signed form will result in additional days of Rewind Lab until the form is signed and returned to the Rewind Lab LEAD Learner.

Lunch Rewind Lab Expectations:

1. Must report immediately to the Rewind Lab, room 317, and wait to be dismissed for Lunch. Students will be escorted to Rewind Lab by their 3rd Period Lunch LEAD Learners.
2. No talking, whispering, etc..
3. No passes to anywhere.
4. No slouching or sleeping - a Wildcat SLANT is expected.
5. No cell phones. Chromebooks and e-readers will be allowed only with approval from Rewind Lab LEAD Learner.
6. Students will reflect on making his/her experience a Rewind, which may be a piece of written work. It is also important to reflect on how our actions not only have on an impact on ourselves, but always impact someone else

*Any student who violates a Rewind Lab Expectation shall automatically be assigned a day of Saturday School .

*Students who are late and/or absent to Rewind Lab will be assigned a day of Saturday School.

After School Rewind Lab will occur on Thursday’s after school for one hour, 3:30 -4:30. Transportation will not be provided.

4. No cell phones (turn in to after school lab leader) Chromebooks and e-readers will be allowed only with approval from Rewind Lab LEAD Learner.
5. Students will reflect on making his/her experience a Rewind, which may be a piece of written work.

*Any student who violates a Rewind Lab Expectation shall automatically be assigned a day of Saturday School.

SATURDAY SCHOOL

​

Saturday School may be assigned to students as a behavioral consequence or for academic recovery purposes. Saturday School will typically take place 1-2 times per month in the morning from 8:00-11:00. Students should be dropped off and picked up at the front entrance of the school. Students that are assigned to Saturday school will be assigned a restorative consequence designed to provide additional opportunities for reflection.

Saturday School Expectations

1. No talking or whispering.

2. No slouching or sleeping—a Wildcat SLANT is expected.

3. No food, drink, or candy.

4. Complete all assigned work.

5. No digital devices with the exception of Chromebooks when approved by the LEAD Learner.

A student who violates a Saturday School Rule shall automatically be assigned an additional day in Saturday School.

If the Saturday School date has been confirmed and the student does not attend, they will be assigned to In School Suspension (ISS) for two school days.

IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION

In School Suspension may be assigned to students as a behavioral consequence for Level 2 infractions, multiple Level 1 infractions, or bus misconduct. Students will attend school as usual and will be dropped off at the district ISS facility located at 304 Wildcat Lane.

In School Suspension Expectations

1. No talking or whispering.

DUE PROCESS

Due process refers to the steps required by law to allow student and/or parent involvement in school decisions concerning discipline. The following steps shall be taken when conducting a hearing concerning possible suspension, expulsion, or other serious disciplinary actions:

Suspension

• The pupil and/or parent shall be given notice of the charges against him/her.
• If the pupil denies the charges, he/she shall be given an explanation of the evidence against him/her and an opportunity to present his/her version.
• If the pupil is suspended, this action shall be reported in writing to the superintendent of schools.
• Parents will be notified of suspension.

Expulsion

• The pupil shall be given notice of the charges against him/her.
• The parent, guardian or custodian shall be given an opportunity for a hearing before the board.

If the disciplinary action stems from violation of state law, the pupil will also be criminally charged. If the pupil is a juvenile, the charge(s) will be handled through the Nelson District Court via the court designated worker. If the pupil is over 18, he/she may possibly face arrest. In either case, the parent/guardian will be contacted by law enforcement.

EXAMPLE LEVEL 1 MISCONDUCT/CONSEQUENCES

Multiple level one misconducts will result in further actions such as, after school detention, Saturday School, In School Suspension, and Rewind collaboration with parent(s)/guardian(s), the student, and OKH LEAD Learners.

The Kentucky General Assembly created the Family Resource and Youth Services Centers (FRYSC) as an intricate part of the Kentucky Education Act (KERA) in 1990. FRYSC were created due to the growing number and complexity of problems faced by our society such as: poverty, family restructuring, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and mental health crisis.

Nspiration Youth Services Center (FRYSC) removes barriers to academic success for students and families. Nspiration Youth Services Center operates under six core components (1) Health and Social Services (2) Career Exploration and Development (3) Summer and Part-Time Job Development for high school students (4) Substance Abuse Education and Counseling (5) Family Crisis and Mental Health Counseling (6) Educational Support and Dropout Prevention.

FAQ’s

How should I go about picking up my child at the end of the day?

Pull into the car pick up line with your pick up number visible to the LEAD Learner releasing students (get number from Mrs. Ohler in the office by filling out this form). Please refrain from entering the office or waiting in the lobby to pick up your student at this time. Picking up your student before dismissal results in a tardy.

How do I get a Pick Up Number?

Pick up numbers are assigned through initial Online Registration. Please contact our Family Caretaker with any questions. 502.349.7040

What iF I need to change my child’s normal mode of transportation?

Please send a note specifying the details of your child’s transportation plan for the day, including the date, time to be released, and to whom or what bus they should be released. This must be taken care of by noon on the day you wish to change the transportation plan. If the request is not completed by noon, your child will be leaving school by way of their typical transportation plan. (Emergency situations will be considered on a case by case basis.)

How do I get parent portal and/or complete online registration?

Please call the school at 349.7040 and ask to speak to the Family Caretaker. You will need to ask the Family Caretaker for a GUID number to create a Parent Portal account. Once you create the account, you need to register your child online.

May I bring food to and/or have lunch with my child?

We work to create an environment of community and outside food from restaurants is a small thing that can hinder that. We request you do not bring fast food, etc. to school for your child. They will not be allowed to eat it in the cafeteria with their peers. You may, however, join your child for lunch by checking in the office and getting a visitor pass during your child’s lunch time. The same is true for breakfast. Bringing in outside food and drink (polar pops, etc.) will require the student to eat/drink in a space in the front office then go to the gym or media center.

When does school start and end? When May I pick up/Drop Off my child?

You may drop your child off at the drop off door as early as 7:30. Your child needs to be in their seat ready to learn at 8:20. We dismiss students to classes at 8:10. Students being picked up are released at 3:10 to the pick up door.
