Objective

  • To establish a dedicated team leader role within the PACU, aimed at alleviating the primary nurse's non-direct care duties, thereby improving patient-centered care and workflow efficiency.

Background

  • Reviews of global surgical and anesthesia care emphasize the need for developing Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACUs) in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Kenya, to improve surgical outcomes.

In PACU, the primary nurse's focus on direct patient care is essential for optimal recovery outcomes.

However, non-direct patient care responsibilities can compete for the primary nurse’s attention to patients.

Methods:

Utilizing a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, existing PACU leadership and an on-site PACU consultant identified the need for additional support.

Over two weeks, the consultant trained two team leaders on their new responsibilities, which included:

Managing patient flow and proactively assigning hospital rooms

Assisting with operational needs to keep the primary nurse focused on patient care

Serving as an educational resource for primary nurses

Elevating safety and workflow concerns to leadership

Communicates pertinent information in order to provide maximum patient care within the department

Serves as an overall on site support for daily operations

Serves as the representative of the hospital and as a clinical role model during interactions will all customers

  • Daily feedback was collected from the team leader orientee to refine the role and responsibilities further.

  • Results:
  • At the conclusion of the two-week implementation, a survey of all PACU nurses (n=8) indicated unanimous support for the continuation of the team leader role. Feedback highlighted improvements in patient care focus, workflow efficiency and overall team dynamics.

Conclusion

  • The establishment of a nurse leader role in the PACU, guided by the PDSA framework, effectively supported primary nurses in delivering quality patient care.

  • The positive reception from staff underscores the potential for this model to be replicated in other units to enhance nursing practice and patient outcomes.
