The contribution Track

Contribution is at the core of our crowdsourced project

  • Contribution is at the core of the Open Food Facts project
  • Today the community drivers are experienced contributors. We want to enlarge our “fanbase” using guidance and gamification.
  • We want everyone to be able to participate, be it only by signaling an issue.

Explanation of choices / Alignment / Impact

  • From the user survey, we realised that:
    • A key motivation factor for contributor is their impact on the data quality
    • The idea to have a leaderboard, mini-games or badges was not as successful as we expected (but survey does not include future potential users)
    • Users express clearly a need for guidance. This was also suggested to us by a professional designer team (feature discoverability).
  • This project focuses mainly on contributors
    • but more contribution also means a higher awareness on food (and ambassadors of such awareness)
    • We try to keep some virality, to help gain a large user base
  • But can increase Open Food Facts impact
    • help bootstrap local communities in new countries
    • Increased quality:
      • benefits all re-users
      • increase partners and institutions trust

Eating is a necessity for every individual, but often this activity is eminently social: as a family, with friends or colleagues, accompanied by professionals, or as part of communities of interest (orphan diseases, fans, taster communities, solidarity grocery shops, etc.), we have to select products, buy them, check their stock, sometimes recommend them, and so on.

Three new features:

  • Collaborative lists: work collaboratively on private lists with some groups: family, etc.
  • Add history features to collaborative lists.
  • Add specific data to the products in the lists (alerts…)
