Graduation Requirements

English (4 credits)
Math (3 credits, including Algebra 1 & Geometry content)
Science (2 credits)
Health (½ credit) Freshman year
Social Science Elective (½ credit)
US History (1 credit) Junior year
Civics (½ credit) Senior year
Computer Literacy (½ credit) Freshman year
Financial Literacy (½ credit) Senior year
PE --required to enroll every year unless you have a waiver (Health & Drivers Ed count)
CTE, Art, or World Language to make 26 total credits
SAT exam (taken junior year)
FAFSA – Complete senior year

College Entrance Requirements

Many Illinois colleges require the following for admission:

English 4 units

Social Studies 3 units

Mathematics 3 units

Laboratory Science 3 units

Electives* 2 units

Research colleges you are interested in early & often, some colleges have very specific entrance requirements.

*U of I Urbana-Champaign requires 3 years of one world language, 4 years are recommended. Other colleges accept electives from Art, Music, Vocational Education or World Language.

Your freshman year is like the foundation of a house you are building---make it strong with as few flaws as possible. Work hard to build a strong academic record from the beginning, so sophomore year you are not fixing mistakes of the past.

Freshman year you must work towards mastering study and organizational skills so the following years are more manageable.

Freshman year we will really focus on getting to know each other. You will identify your learning & productivity style, set SMART goals, learn more about career clusters, organizational & study skills, and identify your strengths.

You will also create a 4 year plan.

Remember, your attendance and all of your semester grades are on your transcript

Maintain a 98% attendance rate

Check in with your teachers often if you need assistance, they want you to do well

Flex time is a great opportunity to get extra help in your most challenging classes

Read your email daily -- check it before Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram etc.

Join a club or a sport within the first month of high school
Pay attention to the Announcements each week
Show up, set goals, and do your best each day
Check in with your School Counselor often & complete all assigned Naviance tasks (Freshman Curriculum, 4 year plan, etc.)
Remember, you are responsible for your results. Manage your time well, make healthy choices and seek independence

If you said Health Sciences, you are right! Over 20% of the class of 2028 is interested in learning more about careers in the Health Sciences cluster.

Let’s learn a little more about this cluster right now!

The healthcare industry is booming and ten-year projections indicate continued strong growth. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that nearly one in seven Americans will be employed in the healthcare and social assistance industry by 2028.

The large population of aging baby boomers is often cited as a major contributor to this growth. As they grow older, many develop health concerns that require more care, increasing the need for workers to meet the demand.

Technology and innovation are expanding the types of healthcare jobs available, as well as generating new products and services. In addition, changes to medical insurance models have expanded the number of people who obtain medical care.

The primary function of the healthcare industry is to treat patients facing illness or injury—whether to cure or rehabilitate from a condition, to maintain wellness, or to provide comfort or palliative care to persons dealing with incurable conditions. A number of other industries relate closely to healthcare, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and health insurance.

In this industry, credentials matter greatly; jobs are generally defined by the education, certification, and licensure you possess, for example Certified Nurse Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Nurse.

Quick facts to know:

Nearly 21 million people are employed in the healthcare and social assistance industry.
Mental healthcare, behavioral health, and substance abuse services are expanding, as they have become increasingly destigmatized.
Telehealth developments continue to expand to make patient care more accessible and reduce staff involvement. Examples include wearable devices that measure and document heart rate, and artificial intelligence nurse coaches.
Wellness care to prevent illness and stay well is gaining emphasis, often by insurance companies seeking to minimize healthcare spending.
Providers are increasingly measured based on patient satisfaction and outcomes.
As more healthcare records and information are communicated digitally, protecting patient data is increasingly important.
