Your Makerspace Challenge:

Save your ice cream cone from DOOM with nothing

but paper!

Design and build a strong and stable structure out of 2 bundles of newspaper & 1 yard of tape.

Must be able to fit your Ice cream cone inside and strong enough to hold at least tray #1

Stability is the capacity of a structure to remain upright and not tip over. Its center of gravity must be centered over its base.

If the center of gravity is centered in the object and close to the ground, the structure will be more stable.

Stable

Strong / Rigid

The shape of a structure determines its rigidity or how much force it can withstand. A good design can prevent deformation and improve the performance of the structure.

Brainstorm & Design

How can you assemble the tubes to make a strong, stable structure?

How can you support the structure to keep them from tilting or twisting when you’ve placed a heavy book on it?

How can you use the cardboard as a platform for the books?

Sketch your ideas!

YOu have

30ish minutes

Build your structure Make sure it can fit your cone.

Test the structure at the testing station.

Observe what happens - are there areas of weakness?

Redesign/Rebuild the structure

Continue to add books to find out how many your structure can hold!

Tilting & Twisting

Find a way to stabilize and support them like attaching tubes in between them.

Structure Collapsed

Make its base as sturdy as possible

A Tube Buckles When Weight is Added

See if the tube is loosely rolled. If so, reroll it tighter and tape it securely. Also, dents, creases, and wrinkles can put add stress to those areas making the material weaker

It Wobbles

Remember, triangles are a good way to increase a structure’s strength and stability. Turn squares into triangles by adding supports that go from one corner of the square to the other.

  1. What made your paper structure especially strong?
  2. What problems did you run into, and how did you solve them?
  3. How did having a team to work with help when designing and building?
  4. Would it be harder to complete alone? Why?
  5. What else could you create with newspaper to give it new life before recycling it?
