What is 3D Data?

Introduction to 3D Data

  • What is 3D data?
    • 3D data refers to 3D visualization that contains information about objects in three dimensions or X, Y and Z axes
    • 3D data can be made with cameras or specialized software
      • Ex. photogrammetry allows pictures to be transformed into 3D data

Types of 3D Data

  • There are many different types of 3D data:
    • Polygonal Geometry
    • Point Clouds
    • Volumetric Data
    • Boundary Representation
    • Appearance Data
    • Scene Data

3D Data File Types

  • There are many different types of 3D data types that exist
  • Some common 3D file types are:
    • StereoLithography(STL) - mostly used for 3D printing and prototyping
      • Represents data as a series of triangles
    • Object(OBJ) - mostly used for modeling and animation
      • OBJ represents data as vertices and faces
    • AMF - is a more modern 3D file which uses metadata to assist with printing and scale of the object

3D Data File Types

  • Some other common 3D file types are:
    • FilmBox(FBX) - Mostly used for modeling and animation
      • FBX represents data as a collection of meshes and materials
    • Polygon File Format(PLY) - Mostly used for 3D scanning and Printing
      • PLY represents data as faces, vertices and colors

Creating 3D Data

How 3D Data is Created

  • 3D data can be created with specialized software called Computer Aided Design (CAD) modeling software
  • Computer CAD software are the most common programs to create 3D data
  • But 3D data can be made with other software such as:
    • Unity
    • Artec Studio
    • Reality Capture/Reality Scan
    • And more!

How to create 3D data

  • Although 3D data is online to purchase, you can easily make your own!
  • By using programs such as Blender or Maya, you can make 3D models to use with 3D printing, virtual reality or augmented reality
  • Each software have a wide variety of tools to use which differ from other software
    • In other words, there are more use cases to use Blender for video creation versus Fusion 360

Applications of 3D Data

13 of 24

How 3D Data is Used

  • 3D data is used just about everywhere!
    • ArcGis
    • Construction
    • Medical Fields
    • Prototyping
  • If you can think of an application which uses 3D data, you are most likely correct

How 3D Data is Shared

  • 3D data can be shared in multiple ways:
    • Websites such as Thingiverse, Grabcad or Sketchfab
    • Cloud based services such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon S3 and Google Drive
    • In person via USB or email
  • There are even conventions that meet annually to discuss projects made with 3D data!

Where to find 3D Data

16 of 24

Online Repositories

  • There are many ways to get 3D data
  • You can find 3D files on:
    • GitHub.com
    • Unity Hub
    • Thingiverse.com
    • GrabCad.com
    • SketchFab.com
    • Morphosource.org

Online Repositories

  • There are also a few marketplaces to buy 3D data
  • Some marketplaces include:
    • eBay
    • Etsy
    • Unity Asset Store
    • Cults 3D
    • CGTrader
    • Do3D

How to Edit 3D Data

19 of 24

3D Modeling Software

  • 3D Data can be edited with various free software
  • Some free 3D software are:
    • Blender
    • Fusion 360
    • Meshmixer
    • SketchUp
    • Unity

Q and A

Questions and Answers!

  1. How big is the storage on the Artec Leo? Do you have to split the scan into multiple jobs?
    1. Internal storage is 256 mb and each scan can either be scanned individually or together in one scan.
  2. I wonder how the collaboration workflow looks like for creating 3D objects. Do you have some version control system to support that process?
    • We use websites such as SketchFab to share models with colleagues and the community.
  3. 3D data vs texture: can you elaborate on how to assign colors to your isosurface?
    • We are unsure about which software is being referenced, but there are many software systems that allow you to color an object with a pen or brush tool. Most of the time, a different filament is needed if 3D printing.

Questions and Answers!

  • Does UCR offer any animation workshops?
    • On occasion we do! We currently have workshops for UCR affiliated students/staff, but we could open it up to the general UC community in the future! We are working on hosting our workshops on our website!
  • How easy is it to scan an anatomical scan (e.g MRI, CT)? E.g. if you wanted to make a custom model of a single patients organ?
    • It is easy to scan a model of an organ from MRI, CT or the actual organ itself. The program used to make the individual heart frames was called 3DViewer, and the hearts were made from dicom and nrrd files
  • Given copyright, do you create your own characters and animations for any official business?
    • We are very careful when it comes to copyright, we do not want to run into problems. Most of the time, modelers ask that you promote their work, but most often than not, you are asked not to sell any of the items or you risk a lawsuit or fine.
