WHAT ARE DIFFERENTIATED ASSIGNMENTS?

Differentiated assignments allow you to accommodate students with different assignments or due dates. This is available in the assignment settings for online graded assignments, discussions, and quizzes. For example:

Scenario 1: Susie is planning to have surgery on the day the paper is due and wants submit the paper outside of the availability period you have set for the assignment. Differentiated assignments will allow you to give Susie a different due date and availability period for the paper than other students in the class.

Scenario 2: You want students to work on different projects so you use differentiated assignments to assign each project to only the selected students. The students will only see the assignments and grades assign to them.

HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE ASSIGNMENTSFOR DUE DATES AND AVAILABILITY PERIOD

  1. In the assignment settings below the Assign to box click +Add
  2. This will display another assign to box where you can add a student’s name and assign a different due date and availability period. When you add a student’s name to the second Assign to box the first box changes to Everyone Else. Basically what this means is that Everyone else gets the first due date and availability period and the selected student(s) gets the second due date and availability period. Students will only see the dates they are assigned.

WHAT NOT TO DO WITH ASSIGNMENTS THAT HAVE PREVIOUS SUBMISSIONS

  1. If most students have completed an assignment that is assigned to everyone and you want to make due date and availability period adjustments for one student, DO NOT REMOVE EVERYONE! If you do, only the student(s) you assign the assignment to will see the assignment and associated grades with the assignment!
  2. Use the Add option instead to make adjustments for one student. (see previous slide)

HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE ASSIGNMENTS WHEN ASSIGNING STUDENTS DIFFERENT ASSIGNMENTS

Note: Only use this option when creating new assignments! See slides 14 and 15 on why this is important!

  1. In the Assign To box click the X next to everyone and enter the student’s name you wish to assign the assignment. Set your due date and availability period as desired.
  2. When you save the assignment you will be warned that the assignment is not assigned to everyone. Click Continue. Create another assignment and assign the selected students to that assignment using the same process.

  1. If availability dates are set on assignments, this may cause issues with module requirements. You may need to make adjustments to assignment settings.
  2. If students have not contributed to a discussion with a Must Contribute module requirement and the discussion’s Until date has passed, they cannot complete the module requirement. Consider removing the Until date when using this module requirement.
  3. If students have not submitted an assignment with the Must Submit module requirement and the assignment’s Until date has passed, they cannot complete the module requirement. Consider removing the Until date when using this module requirement.
  4. If a quiz only has one attempt and has the Must score at least # points module requirement, students who do not meet the score requirement cannot complete the module requirement. In the quiz settings check the box next to multiple attempts so students can continue to take the quiz until they meet the score requirement.
