5.3 Number Patterns Arising out of Addition of Consecutive Numbers.

Three consecutive number

  • 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
  • 2 + 3 + 4 = 9
  • 3 + 4 + 5 =12

.

.

  • 8 + 9 +10=27

Three consecutive numbers

The sums are multiples of 3. Also,

the sum is thrice the middle term.

Four consecutive numbers

  • 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
  • 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 14
  • 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 18

.

.

  • 10 + 11 + 12 + 13 = 46

The sums increase in 4’s.All are

are even numbers which are not the

Multiples of 4.Also,the sum is twice

The sum of the two middle terms .

7 of 8

Five consecutive numbers

The sums are multiples of 5

  • 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15
  • 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 20
  • 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 25

.

.

  • 15 + 16 + 17 + 18 +19 = 85

Obtain the patterns in the sum of six, seven, eight, etc.,

consecutive numbers.

5.4 Adding odd numbers

From the pattern given above, find the sum of first

(a) 10 odd numbers (b)13 odd numbers

(c)22 odd numbers

1 + 3 = 4 (2 x 2)Ans.____

1 + 3 + 5 = 9 (3 x 3)Ans.____

1 + 3 + 5 +7 = 16 (4 x 4)Ans.____

1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 25 (5 x 5)Ans.____

And so on.

How many numbers are added to get 4? What is 2 x 2 ?

How many numbers are added to get 9? What is 3 x 3 ?

How many numbers are added to get 16? What is 4 x 4 ?

How many numbers are added to get 25? What is 5 x 5 ?
