Matthew 6-7“He Taught Them as One Having Authority”
Living the Savior’s teachings can help me become like Him
Living the Savior’s teachings can help me become like Him
SCRIPTURE
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
- Matthew 6:5-6; 7:13-14
Living the Savior’s teachings can help me become like Him
Scott D. Whiting
Of the Seventy
[A]ll are under the directive to become like Him, just as Jesus Christ became like the Father. As we progress, we become more complete, finished, and fully developed. Such teaching … comes directly from the Master Himself. It is through this lens that lives should be lived, communications considered, and relationships fostered.
…It is important for me as I strive to become like Him to record my experiences and what I am learning. As I study with one of His attributes deep in my mind, the scriptures become new as I see examples of this attribute in His teachings, His ministry, and His disciples…You are good enough, you are loved, but that does not mean that you are yet complete. There is work to be done in this life and the next. Only with His divine help can we all progress toward becoming like Him.
- Elder Scott D. Whiting, “Becoming like Him,”General Conference, October 2020
I’m Trying to Be like Jesus(Children’s Songbook #78)
MUSIC
1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;
I’m following in his ways.
I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.
At times I am tempted
to make a wrong choice,
But I try to listen
as the still small voice whispers,
Words and music: Janice Kapp Perry, b. 1938

2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;
I’m learning to serve my friends.
I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.
I try to remember
the lessons he taught.
Then the Holy Spirit
enters into my thoughts, saying:
Chorus:
“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.”

3:05
Heavenly Father will hear and answer me when I pray
Heavenly Father will hear and answer me when I pray
SCRIPTURE
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
- Matthew 6:7-8; 7:7-8, 11
Heavenly Father will hear and answer me when I pray
Brook P. Hales
Of the Seventy
An important and comforting doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that our Heavenly Father has perfect love for His children. Because of that perfect love, He blesses us not only according to our desires and needs but also according to His infinite wisdom…One aspect of that perfect love is our Heavenly Father’s involvement in the details of our lives, even when we may not be aware of it or understand it. We seek the Father’s divine guidance and help through heartfelt, earnest prayer…
The Father is aware of us, knows our needs, and will help us perfectly. Sometimes that help is given in the very moment or at least soon after we ask for divine help. Sometimes our most earnest and worthy desires are not answered in the way we hope, but we find that God has greater blessings in store. And sometimes our righteous desires are not granted in this life…God hears our prayers. I know that as an all-knowing, loving Father, He answers our prayers perfectly, according to His infinite wisdom, and in ways that will be to our ultimate benefit and blessing.
- Elder Brook P. Hales, “Answers to Prayer,”General Conference, April 2013

2:06
I can seek eternal treasures instead of earthly treasures
I can seek eternal treasures instead of earthly treasures
SCRIPTURE
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
- Matthew 6:19-21, 33
I can seek eternal treasures instead of earthly treasures
Dallin H. Oaks
Of the First Presidency
Our priorities determine what we seek in life…“Seek … first to build up the kingdom of God” means to assign first priority to God and to His work...Jesus taught that “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth”…the treasures of our hearts—our priorities—should not be what the scriptures call “riches [and] the vain things of this world”. The “vain things of [the] world” include every combination of that worldly quartet of property, pride, prominence, and power. As to all of these, the scriptures remind us that “you cannot carry them with you”. We should be seeking the kind of treasures the scriptures promise the faithful: “great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures”. All around us we have the good examples of those who seek permanent treasures—those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” and put the kingdom of God first in their lives…Our priorities are most visible in how we use our time.
- President Dallin H. Oaks, “Focus and Priorities,”General Conference, April 2001
Seek the Lord Early(Children’s Songbook #108)
MUSIC
I’ll seek the Lord early while in my youth,
And he will help me to know the truth.
I’ll search the scriptures and find him there,
Then go to our Father in fervent prayer.
I’ll seek the Lord early, and I’ll obey
His living prophets in all they say.
I’ll keep his commandments; his love will abound.
I will seek the Lord early, and he will be found.

How Do the Savior’s Teachings Help Me Make Righteous Judgments?
How Do the Savior’s Teachings Help Me Make Righteous Judgments?
SCRIPTURE
1 Now these are the words which Jesus taught his disciples that they should say unto the people.
2 Judge not unrighteously, that ye be not judged; but judge righteous judgment.
4 And again, ye shall say unto them, Why is it that thou beholdest the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
5 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and canst not behold a beam in thine own eye?
12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
- JST Matthew 7:1-2, 4-5, 12
How Do the Savior’s Teachings Help Me Make Righteous Judgments?
Lynn G. Robbins
Former Member of the Presidency of the Seventy
In His mortal life, Jesus Christ was a loving judge, uncommonly wise and patient. He is known in the scriptures as “the righteous judge”, and His counsel to us is to also “judge righteous judgment”, and to “put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good … [and] to judge righteously”… We sometimes forget that when He gave the counsel to be as He is, it was in the context of how to judge righteously.
…The natural man and woman in each of us has a tendency to condemn others and to judge unrighteously, or self-righteously…the principles of righteous judgment apply to all of us, especially to parents who have a daily opportunity to use these principles with their children. To effectively teach a child is the very essence of good parenting, and to lovingly discipline is the very essence of being a righteous judge… There is only one way to judge righteous judgment, as Jesus Christ does, and that is to be as He is.
- Elder Lynn G. Robbins, “The Righteous Judge,”General Conference, October 2016
As a Child of God(Children’s Friend)
MUSIC
I came to earth with power to choose.
Good choices bless me and my family too.
As a child of God, I receive special light:
The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.
I feel so safe and happy because
Such feelings of peace come from family love.
As a child of God, I receive special light:
The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.
In my own home I’ll happily serve.
I’ll strengthen my family by my good works.
As a child of God, I receive special light:
The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.

How Do the Savior’s Teachings Help Me Make Righteous Judgments?
We can identify true and false prophets by their fruits
We can identify true and false prophets by their fruits
SCRIPTURE
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19-20 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
- Matthew 7:15-20
We can identify true and false prophets by their fruits
Dean L. Larsen
Former Member of the Seventy
The Lord’s work is known by its fruits…The Savior acknowledged that there would be imposters who would attempt to pass themselves off as his authorized representatives. He warned of false prophets who would come in sheep’s clothing but who would have their own selfish motives to fulfill. “Ye shall know them by their fruits,” he said…It is interesting that this declaration by the Savior was made in response to accusations from the scribes and the Pharisees that he was performing his miracles and healings by the power of the devil.
The attempts by the Savior’s enemies to destroy his work by discrediting him were futile. All he said and did has stood the test of time and has borne good fruit in the lives of millions of people…Those who receive the gospel are expected to manifest its fruits in their lives, not only for their own benefit and blessing, but for the purpose of drawing others to the truth…In significant ways their lives will manifest the fruits of the gospel and set them apart as a beacon to all who are seeking for light and truth…those who do the Lord’s work demonstrate it by the fruits of their labors.

“Give,” Said the Little Stream(Children’s Songbook #236)
MUSIC
1. “Give,” said the little stream,
“Give, oh! give, give, oh! give.”
“Give,” said the little stream,
As it hurried down the hill;
“I’m small, I know, but wherever I go The fields grow greener still.”
2. “Give,” said the little rain,
“Give, oh! give, give, oh! give.”
“Give,” said the little rain,
As it fell upon the flow’rs;
“I’ll raise their drooping heads again,”
As it fell upon the flow’rs.

3. Give, then, as Jesus gives,
Give, oh! give, give, oh! give.
Give, then, as Jesus gives;
There is something all can give.
Do as the streams and blossoms do:
For God and others live.
Chorus:
Singing, singing all the day,
“Give away, oh! give away.”
Singing, singing all the day,
“Give, oh! give away.”

I can build on a strong foundation by following Jesus
I can build on a strong foundation by following Jesus
SCRIPTURE
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
- Matthew 7:24-27
I can build on a strong foundation by following Jesus
Dean M. Davies
Former Member of the Presiding Bishopric
Like the designers and builders of our time, our loving and kind Father in Heaven and His Son have prepared plans, tools, and other resources for our use so that we can build and frame our lives to be sure and unshaken…
During His ministry the Savior taught with love and clarity the doctrines, principles, and necessary actions that would preserve our lives and strengthen our character…none of us would knowingly construct our homes, places of work, or sacred houses of worship on sand or rubble or without appropriate plans and materials. Let us accept the Savior’s invitation to come unto Him…by anchoring our lives to Jesus Christ and to His Atonement…we will have the confidence that our lives have been built upon a sure foundation—a foundation that will never fall.
- Elder Dean M. Davies, “A Sure Foundation,”General Conference, April 2013

The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
