Mission Statement

The International Academy community, through the International Baccalaureate program, instills cultural appreciation and global citizenship while promoting personal development and a passion for learning.

Instruction: The instruction of the International Academy will be engaging, innovative, student-centered, and inquiry based.

Goal: Promote and support effective and innovative pedagogy in the classroom

Curriculum: The curriculum of the International Academy will be in full alignment with the standards of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programs, in addition to state standards.

Goal: Interdisciplinary units will be fully implemented and assessed at all levels (goal of two units per year for MYP--one each semester)

Culture: The culture of the International Academy will balance the social, emotional, and physical health of our community. We will embrace and value commonalities and individuality.

Goal: Continue to build our capacity as a community that cultivates a global culture encouraging acceptance and inclusion

Assessment: Assessments will fairly evaluate the unique and diverse abilities and knowledge base of all students. Formative assessments will be used to strengthen skills, provide practice and feedback to students during the learning process. Summative assessments will emphasize mastery of the skills and content knowledge that students have had an opportunity to learn.

Goal: Define and align the assessment philosophy and policy within departments and as a school

2019 IB Results

  • 90% Diploma Acquisition (78% World Average, 64% U.S. Average, 70% Michigan Average).
  • The IA is the second largest IB Diploma granting high school in the world with 370 seniors who took IB exams in 2019.
  • Teachers within each course analyze the component scores from the exams to identify specific areas of growth that they to address as a tri-campus department. They then discuss and agree to specific MYP and DP goals for the school year.

AdvancED Visit Spring 2019

  • The academy makes an intensive effort to implement a system that supports student learning and continuous improvement. A major focus of the curriculum is the implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Degree program that supports the mission and vision of the school. The mission states, “The International Academy Community, through the International Baccalaureate program, instills cultural appreciation and global citizenship while promoting personal development and a passion for learning.” This was evident in the interviews, classroom observations, and artifacts shared by the IA.

  • Strong relationships within and outside the school foster student learning and achievement. As was clear with interviews, supporting documentation, and observations, all stakeholder groups expressed that the school provides an environment that is founded on and supported by strong personal relationships.

  • Staff in the school buildings adhere to and consistently apply systematic procedures to sustain effective and efficient operations that support teaching and learning. The school goals for each year are focused and based on the mission and vision of IA and the needs of the students.

National Blue Ribbon School

  • In spring 2018, we were invited to apply to become a National Blue Ribbon School
  • In order to qualify for a high performing school, schools must be in the top 15% of all schools in the state on reading and mathematics assessments as well as rank in the top 40% of schools in the state on performance of subgroup
  • There are only 349 schools nationwide, public and private, who earned this distinguished award in 2018
  • In the fall of 2018, we were notified we earned this honor. Dr. Machesky, Ms. Gibson and Mrs. Fairman attended the ceremony in Washington D.C.
