GOAL 3: Vital Records

Choice A:

“FS: Michigan Vital Records”

- In Michigan Birth, Marriage, and Death Records Online emphasize that these are good online resources to check in your research. Most of these are available as QUIKLinks in The Family History Guide.

- In Tips discuss each bullet point for suggestions in working with vital records.

- In Substitute Records note the links to FamilySearch Wiki articles with types of records to explore if vital records are not available.

“Access Genealogy” link

- Scroll down to Birth Records. Explain that this article has tips for ordering vital records from the state of Michigan. Each main section in the article - birth, marriage, death, and divorce - has similar tips.

Choice B:

“FS: How to Find Michigan Birth Records”

- Scroll through the article to show the basic sections. Explain that it has info for finding records by time period, as well as how to obtain records from state agencies.

“FS: Michigan Bible Records”

- In Online Resources and Websites, mention the categories for Databases, Transcriptions … and Digital Books as places to find family bibles.

- In Why Search for Family Bibles briefly summarize the paragraph for key points about family bibles.

“LDS Genealogy” link

- Explain that this article has links for county and statewide vital records. In County Specific Birth Records click the “See More” link to show additional county resources.

“Vital Records Practice” link

- Click the link to show a sample research problem to solve with a selected record collection (QUIKLink).

- Click “Hints” to show tips for solving the problem.

- Mention that the “Answers” link has the answers to the research problem.

- Also mention that there are additional Practice Exercises later in this Goal.

Choice C:

“FS: How to Find Michigan Marriage Records”

- Scroll through the article to show the basic sections. Explain that it has info for finding records by time period, as well as how to obtain records from state agencies.

“Explore links for Michigan marriage records”

- Click the link to open the “I Dream Of” site.

- Scroll down and click the Houghton County marriages link.

- Review the columns in the table and briefly scroll through the list.

Choice D:

Explain that the first several steps have links to obituary resources. Most of these are for recent obituaries, but some older obits have been transcribed on the Ancestor Hunt site.

“Explore The Ancestor Hunt for obituaries”

- Scroll down to the first list of links and explain that these have good background info for obituaries.

- Scroll down to “Michigan Obituaries” and select “Michigan Obituaries - Obit City” - then briefly browse the list.

- Scroll through the article to show the basic sections. Explain that it has info for finding records by time period, as well as how to obtain records from state agencies.

- Open a link to demonstrate a county resource.

- In Population Schedules briefly review the paragraphs.

- In Non-Population Schedules summarize the first paragraph to emphasize the information captured on federal censuses for Michigan, outside the regular population name list.

- In Online State and Territorial Censuses summarize the first paragraph about state censuses.

- In Why Use the Census review the bullet list for types of information that can be found in the state census records.
