Racial Bias in AI

25 of 41

Introduction to Racial Bias in AI

  • In workforce development, AI screens job applicants, assesses skills, and personalizes career guidance.

  • AI perpetuates and amplifies existing societal biases, particularly racial bias.

  • AI’s output is determined by its input.

26 of 41

Examples of Racial Bias in HR

  • Hiring and Recruitment Algorithms: Names, schools, speech pattern biases can disadvantage qualified candidates from underrepresented racial groups.
  • Skills Assessment & Predictive Analytics: AI systems designed to predict job success or recommend training pathways can be skewed by biased data.
  • Facial Recognition and Proctoring Software: AI facial recognition often misidentifies people with darker skin, causing unfair accusations or access issues.
  • Automated Decision Support: Client suitability AI recommendation tools perpetuate biases if their underlying algorithms or data are flawed.

27 of 41

Impact of Racial Bias

Reinforces Systemic Inequality: Biased AI can worsen racial disparities in employment, income, and career progression.

Erodes Trust: When AI systems are perceived as unfair, it can erode trust in technology and in the organizations that use them, particularly among marginalized communities.

Missed Talent: Businesses and organizations miss out on qualified talent due to biased screening and assessment processes.

Legal and Ethical Risks: The use of biased AI can lead to legal challenges related to discrimination and raises significant ethical concerns.

Understanding is the first step to preparing us to be advocates.

28 of 41

Why Racial Bias Exists in AI

  • Biased Training Data

AI learns from societal data - that has biases, which can under-represent groups, leading to biased outcomes.

  • Flawed Algorithm DesignBias can be introduced by how problems are defined and which algorithms are used, especially if based on biased goals or data. (zip codes, loans, education, etc)
  • Lack of Team DiversityHomogenous development teams may overlook potential biases, resulting in AI systems that don’t account for all users’ needs.
  • Feedback Loops:Biased AI decisions can reinforce and amplify existing societal biases over time.

Designing Inclusive & Diverse AI Education

  • Inclusive Design: Teach AI & bias using varied formats (text, visuals, discussions) that is diverse, and let staff demonstrate learning in different ways.
  • AI Literacy: Cover basic AI concepts, data awareness, and how to critically evaluate tools for bias and fairness.
  • Ethics & Bias: Discuss racial bias in AI, ethical responsibilities, and how to identify and address bias.
  • Practical Focus: Use real-world scenarios, provide tool assessment checklists, and empower staff to advocate for equitable AI.
  • Continuous Learning: Encourage ongoing education, sharing of best practices, and provide resources for staying updated.

Open Gamma.app: Create a 20-slide high-level presentation about how to use AI over a period of 6 weeks at 3 hours per day to an HR team. The industry is workforce development. The goal is to familiarize the team with AI tools and get them to use them.
