Who is in Charge?

The Fire Emergency Team

  • Incident Commander/Chief Executive Officer
    • Manages the fire emergency
  • MIS Manager
  • Facility Manager
  • Safety Officer

If You See A Fire or Smoke

  • Stay calm and try not to panic
  • Follow R.A.C.E
    • Rescue
    • Alarm
    • Confine
    • Extinguish/Evacuate
  • Notify CEO/IC and Security
  • Wait for further instructions from IC
  • Grab department 2-way radio

Rescue

  • Rescue everyone who is near the fire or smoke

  • Guide these individuals to a safe area away from the smoke or fire or the Refuge area if instructed to
  • Call a “CODE RED” and the LOCATION 3 time over the intercom to alert IHC staff

Alarm

  • Alarm by pulling the nearest fire alarm
  • Fire alarms are located at each EXIT doorway
  • This step ensures local fire department is notified

Confine

  • Confine the fire by closing all doors
  • Make sure the fire does not spread by making sure all nearby doors are closed

Extinguish OR Evacuate

To EVACUATE – first listen for order from IC then move to designated Refuge Area

To EXTINGUISH - try putting out the fire using

P.A.S.S.

When Extinguishing Use P.A.S.S.

  • P – Pull out the safety pin
  • A – Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
  • S – Squeeze the handle
  • S – Sweep the nozzle side to side

When Evacuating Remember To…

  • Grab department 2-way radio
  • Explain to the patients and visitors of a possible fire in the building
  • Explain the importance of keeping calm
  • Listen for any instructions from the Incident Commander
  • Listen for the TERMINATION of the fire emergency
  • If fire emergency has been terminated the Incident Commander will announce: “CODE RED ALL CLEAR” 3 times

Guide patients, visitors, and staff to designated Refuge area

Conclusion

Code Red may be called for drills or false alarms but

IHC will treat each call as if the Code Red is a true and active fire emergency

Learn the IHC Refuge Area – especially the designated area for your department

Become familiar where fire extinguishers are located

If you see a fire hazard or potential hazard tell someone!

WHAT IS CODE YELLOW?

  • Staff assist call
    • Safety code call when a person is in need of immediate assistance
      • Is not in distress
    • Immediate assistance can include:
      • Walking
      • Transfers
      • Minimal bleeding
      • Non-life threatening situations

CALLING A CODE WHEN OUTSIDE MAIN IHC BUIDLING

  • Staff should first provide assistance to the extent of their capability or is necessary
  • If more assistance is needed the staff can provide an escort or transport to the main IHC building

CALLING A CODE WHEN INSIDE

  • Once inside main IHC building or any other IHC building and if more assistance is needed announce “CODE YELLOW” and the location 3 times
  • All near and able staff will respond and provide assistance
    • Including:
      • Walk-in Medical Provider
      • Medical clinic nurse
      • Security

If any point the situation becomes a person in distress Code Blue will be put into motion

REMEMBER

  • The code can be terminated at any point by medical staff
  • Anyone can call a Code Yellow
  • This is non-life threatening safety code
  • Security may contact you for statements to complete and incident report
