November Meeting Program: All About Quilts of Valor

The mission of the national Quilts of Valor Foundation (qovf.org) is “to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” There are currently 491 QoV groups around the country, with a very active group based in North Georgia and Western North Carolina through our Guild, chaired by Sue Young.

At our November meeting, on Tuesday, November 16, at 12:30 pm, Lt. Col. Janice Wilmot (USAF NC, ret.) and Capt. Sue Young (USAF NC, 1974-77) will share details of the program at the Guild’s monthly meeting. They will talk about how the quilts are created, who qualifies to be awarded a quilt, and how you can join this very rewarding project to thank our military members and veterans for their service.

On Saturday, November 13, the Quilts of Valor group will be awarding several quilts at a ceremony in the Blairsville Historic Courthouse. The public is invited to join them at 11:00 am to honor these service members and veterans.

Christmas panel quilts.

Meredith Warwick

This is a commissioned baby quilt which was for a mother who asked for anything NOT PINK for her baby girl quilt. I got the patterns from an Etsy site called Burlap & Blossoms which has a ton of fun block designs. However after I put the quilt together I noticed some critters were missing eyes, which I simply colored in with an archival pen as the squares would have just been too small for me to piece.

Pat Jeunelot

I love Navajo style quilts. I knew I had to make this quilt when I found this free pattern called Sparkling Solids on the Wilmington prints site.

Mary Manna

The quilt was made for our four grandchildren-another way of showing them they are loved. It was intended to be a warm, fuzzy, couch-potato kind of quilt under which they could snuggle together while watching t.v. But the quilt had a mind of its own, and I had to follow along with its mandates. It became an heirloom quilt, and means that grandma must now make another one to warm her little snuggle-bunnies!

This green/red one is a project I did with a group of novice quilters I am teaching at my church.

Ruth McKinley

This is a modern Lone Star made from a Villa Rosa pattern in a Mystery class in Dahlonega. Sarah Sorenson quilted different patterns on each point. I don’t usually make modern quilts, but I really like this one.

Sue Young

This Quilt of Valor was pieced by me and beautifully quilted by Sarah Sorenson. It will be awarded to my cousin's husband, Fred Mebus, a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran.

Susan Slaton

I made this top in Texas and got the backing in October. I really like the collection of fabrics, so I think I'll keep it. I sprung the big bucks for the coordinating backing.

Happy Squares-23x30.5 inches

I had a packet of 2 ½ inch squares that I decided to just sew together alternating light and dark squares.

It could be something like a “fidget” quilt that a nursing home resident might enjoy looking at all the different designs and colors.

I made these 2 pillows as Christmas gifts for two friends who have dogs that look like this.

The Star quilt is for my youngest sister, Vanessa. The horse quilt is for my sister's husband, Michael (our brother in law).

This is the last of 10 quilts I made for my sister and my sister's sons, wives, youngest son's fiancee, kids and 1 future kid.
