Sporting Solutions: Breaking Down Barriers in Newham

Many of the Subco service users left their homeland to settle in the UK for different reasons. They share memories of how Newham has transformed to become a more diverse and vibrant place to live.

Their wealth of knowledge and experience regarding heritage is demonstrated in their willingness to share experiences, talk about the challenges and discrimination they faced including how they broke down barriers, stigma, stereotypes, and the impact sport has played in relation to individuals and brought Black and Asian communities together.

Our project explored the role sports has played in the lives of people from South Asian and African Caribbean communities who live or have a connection to Newham.

What opportunities did they have in Newham while growing up, raising families, working here and growing older. To find out, we worked with a number of local voluntary, community and faith organisations as well as Newham Archives and Eastside Community Heritage.

In Newham there was a kick start of Karate as a contact sport in the 1968-70 period. This was due to a gentleman now known as Ticky Donovan. There were several clubs formed under his banner of Isshinryu. It hadn’t become an Olympic sport, but there were a lot of international individuals from Newham in karate.

The senior Sensei was Tyrone Whyte. He is one of the most senior black belts in the country. He’s also coached some national and international teams. In the borough games, consisting of 22 boroughs of up to 16-year-old secondary school boys, Newham always tended to do well in contacts sports like karate and boxing.
