The Story of Now
A story of now outlines our motivations, our purpose and goals, as well as our immediate next steps.
A powerful story of now provides clarity and urgency to our actions.
We move the story from “me” to “we” to “now”.

Literacy Story of Now
Chrisciel Ramirez
Lighthouse Family Leader
Hello everyone my name is Chrisciel Ramirez and my husband and I have 3 children attending Lighthouse. My eldest daughter Mikayla is in 7th grade, my son Eric is in 3rd grade and my youngest daughter Gabriela is in kindergarten. We live in the Sobrante park and have been apart of the Lighthouse Community since my oldest daughter was in kindergarten.
I was born and raised in SF but due to my father serving in the military my family moved often and unfortunately that caused me to struggle to keep up with my peers. My mom and teacher worked really hard to get me on grade level, and soon after I was an honor roll student. A quality education is important to me and I was referred to Lighthouse by family.i liked the structure of the school, felt welcomed and a strong sense of community.
I feel right now we can make sure we as families are proactively helping our children rather than reactively trying to catch them up. That all starts with being in the know about the data, testing, and grade level standards. Data transparency is key.
For my kids, my youngest daughter is on grade level with reading but currently struggling with math. My third grade son is a product of pandemic. Last year I joined Lit 4 Literacy to help him improve in ELA because he was far below. Through collaborating with his teacher and implementing the strategies I used in Lit 4 Literacy, he is now super close to being on grade level. SO many 3rd families have this same experience with their kids who started school during COVID. For my daughter in 7th grade, I realized I actually don’t know her SBAC scores so I am going to find out.
I came back after graduating from Lit 4 Literacy last year to be a Lead Parent to share what I have learned with you all so that you may be better able to assist and advocate for your own children with a little more knowledge and skills to do so.
It seems like there is a stigma around asking too many questions but this is a tight knit and safe space and your child is not the only one struggling…that is actually true for most of us. We gotta ask the questions we have.
We as parents are being called to be active participants in our child’s education, whether that means working or literacy or protecting our rights as parents to choose whatever school we want for our kids through charter renewal.. As a school we are being called to reach common ground with the transparency of data, grade level expectations and ELA goals.
If we understand the science of reading then we can complement classroom learning at home.
Being an active parent and showing up makes a difference not only for our own kids but school wide. Last year during session 5 of Lit 4 Literacy, after we did the classroom observations, I made the suggestion that we have a syllabus for our kid’s classes so we have a better idea of what they are working on. And this year some teachers gave out this info with the modules for math and ELA, and timeline. It matters when we get involved, get in the know and speak up. I encourage all of you to do so.
Historia de lectura de ahora
Chrisciel Ramirez
Lighthouse Family Leader
