History

  • History of Chess spans 1500 years
  • The earliest predecessor of chess was invented in India before the 6th Century
  • From India it spread to Persia
  • When Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by Muslims and subsequently spread to Southern Europe
  • Chess evolved into roughly its current form in Europe in 15th century

Tournament Chess

  • First modern chess tournament was held in London at 1851 won by German Adolf Anderssen.
  • First world chess championship was won by Austrian-born American Wilhelm Steinitz at 1886 held in USA.
  • Current world chess champion is Norway’s Magnus Carlsen with an ELO rating of 2855

Chess and Computer

  • IBM’s Deep Blue was the first computer to defeat Human World Champion Garry Kasparov in 1997
  • Current chess engines are able to defeat even the strongest human players under normal conditions.
