why cybersmart?

In 2011 Manaiakalani schools began a pilot of 1:1 devices. Having already identified digital learning as the ‘hook’ to engage our young people and the community to better educational outcomes, digital citizenship was also identified as critical if we were going to be ‘at home in a digital world.’

We looked around for a curriculum to support us, and apart from the odd poster and meme video, there was nothing that could be used as a teaching sequence….And so we developed our own Cybersmart learning.

At this time the Australian government were using ‘cybersmart’ to describe their programme to support online practices for learning.

This resonated with us, specifically the idea that being cybersmart empowered our young people to make smart decisions when they are online.

This is VITALLY important for your schools and young people. We would be irresponsible to take people online, owning and ‘driving’ their own highly sophisticated device with access to the world if we did not have a purposeful, intentional programme for teaching them how to be positive and successful digital citizens.

In NZ and around the world, much of the programming produced to support learning did not reflect our positive Cybersmart language i.e. either focussed on being safe, which did little to empower our young people with the reality of being online and digital citizenship or was negative and scaremongering which was unhelpful.

The tide seems to be turing and people are catching up with Manaiakalani!! e.g.

2017 ISTE Digital Citizenship focus on the positive and empowering learners
2018 Google introduced the ‘Be internet Awesome’ programme.
2019 ISTE Digital Citizenship is about the DOs versus the Don’ts

This takes practise ....

Become adept and fluent at using our positive Cybersmart language and encourage learners to do the same
Be cognisant of the imaging and sound bites we are using
Identify opportunities to connect with authentic examples that help our young people understand that every time they connect, collaborate and share online it combines to create their digital footprint.
