JESUS IDENTIFIES HIS BETRAYER: GOD’S PLAN, A LACK OF DEVOTION AND THE DANGER OF FALLING INTO THE DARKNESS

John 13:18-30

3 of 45

18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’ 19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” (John 13:18-20)

4 of 45

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(John 13:21-25)

5 of 45

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. (John 13:26-30)

Now when it was time for supper, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, to betray him.” (John 13:2)

1) THE SOVEREIGNTY OF CHRIST IN THE FACE OF BETRAYAL

10 of 45

“the psalmist calls upon God to have mercy upon him in his sickness because his enemies are gloating over his misfortune, and even his close friend whom he trusted and with whom he shared bread has turned against him.

11 I, even I, am the Lord,    and apart from me there is no savior.12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—    I, and not some foreign god among you.You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God.13     Yes, and from ancient days I am he.No one can deliver out of my hand.    When I act, who can reverse it?” (Isaiah 53:11-13)

2) DEVOTION TO CHRIST AND THE TREATMENT OF OUR ENEMIES

23 of 45

A) DEVOTION TO CHRIST

24 of 45

Are we just going through the motions of faith, sitting at the table without truly submitting to the Master?

25 of 45

”not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)

26 of 45

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and, in your name, perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:21-23)

27 of 45

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 7:6)

APPLICATION#1

Take a check of your quiet time with God. Wherever you are at today, how can you carve out time with Him?

Examine your commitment to the things of God. If there is a lacking commitment, maybe that’s because you don’t see Him in what’s available. Draw that out with Him in prayer.

B) TREATMENT OF OUR ENEMIES

30 of 45

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

31 of 45

17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17)

32 of 45

You prepare a table before me    in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows. (Psalm 23:5)

33 of 45

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Gal. 2:20)

34 of 45

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. (Romans 12:17-19)

3) THE DECEPTION OF SIN AND THE WALK BACK INTO DARKNESS

39 of 45

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

40 of 45

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:5-9)

41 of 45

6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. (Galatians 6:1)
