Background

Started conducting Educational Drone Trainings in 2015 or 16

The first drone that I ever flew was a 4K DJI Phantom 3 (think Cadillac) in front of almost an entire school including the principal and superintendent. I didn’t crash it. The second drone I flew was a relatively inexpensive SYMA (think Vespa), and I immediately crashed it. Now ask me why and why is it important?

Before you fly…

  • The main players in the game are DJI and Parrot. Both are educator-friendly, but Parrot’s mini-drones are hard to find and more expensive than they used to be.
  • Robolink’s CoDrone EDU is now a factor as well as larger programs such as US Drone Soccer and Rocket Drones.
  • There are others such as UDI, SYMA, etc.
  • Most newer models have Altitude Hold. This is a must for beginners.
  • Consider your objective for purchasing - Photo/Video, FPV, Coding, Learning Activities, Racing, Drone Soccer, etc.
  • Also consider costs of extra batteries and other parts.
  • Disposable?

  1. Use drones to teach Coding/CS
  2. Use drones to teach Drones
  3. Use drones for CTE (mass media, drone pilot credentials, etc)
  4. Use drones to teach other subjects
  5. Use drones to teach STEM
  6. Use drones for competitions
  7. Can you think of others?

Flying Task

  1. Walk through this list for flight instructions: https://bit.ly/flighttask
  2. Take a few minutes to practice with the drone.
  3. After you are comfortable flying the drone, time yourself navigating the obstacle course.
  4. An extension of this would be to graph the flight times of each team member.
