Ball, Base, Backup - Players are Always Moving

When the ball is put in play, each player is doing one of three things:

  1. Moving to field the ball.
  2. Moving to cover a base.
  3. Moving to backup another fielder.

6 of 66

Relays

Important Reminders

  • The ball is initially directed to get an out on the lead runner or prevent the lead runner from advancing further.
  • The Player covering the base lines up the relay between their self and the outfielder.
  • Relay positions their self at an appropriate distance from the outfielder such that their throw can reach the base and the outfielder can throw to them in the air.
  • The outfielder throws the ball through the relay so that the relay can catch and relay or let the ball go through to the base.
  • The player covering the base instructs the relay to “cut” the ball and hold or throw the ball to a base or let the ball go through to the base.
