Redesigning SARB for Intensive MTSS Support

Reenforce SARB as a Tier 3 intervention: At the district level, SARB is being restructured to reflect its role as a last-resort, intensive support strategy within MTSS.

Require Tier 1 & Tier 2 documentation before referral: Schools must demonstrate that foundational supports have been implemented and documented before initiating SARB. This ensures fidelity to the MTSS framework.

Align case management with MTSS protocols: Social workers, mentors, and support staff will use standardized processes to track and respond to chronic absenteeism and related barriers.

Coordinate district teams for intensive support: Collaboration across FACE, attendance, and student services teams ensures a unified, equitable approach to Tier 3 interventions.

Workshops: Equip families with knowledge and tools to support consistent attendance and engagement. Positive Parent Skills classes for parents/guardians, Truancy Classes for students.

Service referrals/outreach: Provide service referrals to outside agency partners and informing parents what to expect

Tailored Support: Recognize and respond to each family's unique context. We see this especially with transportation concerns. Provide the support based on the need (locally provided no-cost busses, district bussing, bus passes for adults, gas cards/vouchers, ride share transportation, etc.

Inclusive Messaging: Ensure messaging is culturally responsive, accessible, and respectful of diverse family experiences. Keeping the messages timely and specific. Leveraging Parent Square to use its multi-language tool. Truancy notifications updated to reflect recent legislation (less punitive) and Nudge Notices based on attendance bands.

Trauma-Informed Practices

Recruit & train SARB staff in trauma-informed and SEL practices
Use restorative conversations to foster trust and connection
Establish safe spaces for students and families
Design interventions that avoid re-traumatization

For this to work well, we:

Train SARB staff: Ensure all personnel are equipped with trauma-informed and social-emotional learning strategies to respond with empathy and effectiveness.

Restorative conversations: At times, using restorative circle-like questions about harm to help rebuild relationships, foster accountability, and promote healing.

Safe low-risk questions: Provide all stakeholders an environment where students, families and school site personnel feel secure, heard, and supported. Example: scale scored questions (1-10); “What do you need from”? as closing thoughts.

Interventions, not punishments: Avoid punitive approaches; Truancy classes are not hours to complete but rather an opportunity reflect and learn. Interventions that acknowledge trauma and promote resilience.

Asking, will this intervention help reduce barriers vs is this family deserving of the intervention.
