How you choose a book to read

It is known that books are our best friends. When I choose a book, the first thing that catches my eye is the books design, the author and the title. I usually read the description from the back of the book to see if it’s the kind of book I’m interested in. Besides, I’ve read a lot of books because they’ve come out as films.

There are few tips how to choose a good book which I follow:

  • I read the bestseller lists published in most newspapers and find out which new books are making headlines and why.
  • I choose books by authors I’ve enjoyed in the past.
  • Also I ask someone to recommend me a good book. For example I usually ask my parents and friends because their tastes are similar to mine.
  • And at last I ask the librarian or bookseller about the location of the books I’m looking for.

My favourite book and why

I am going to say a few words about my favourite book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It is written by the well- known English writer of the twentieth century Joanne Rowling. The genre of the book is fantasy.

The book tells about a magical school. The main characters are Harry Potter and his two friends . They have exciting adventures. There are some funny episodes in the book. I could not help smiling (не мог сдержать улыбку) when I read about Ron Weasley - Harry’s best friend. To cut a long story short, Harry manages to save the Philosopher's Stone and help the world of magicians.

I love this book because I’m fond of fantasy. I really enjoy reading about imaginary worlds. I can say that Harry Potter” is the book about friendship and about responsibility. These topics are important not only in the magic world but for everyone. In my opinion, the book is worth reading.

My favourite book and why

I am going to say a few words about my favourite book «Jane Eyre» written by the well- known English writer of the 19 century Charlotte Bronte.

It is a romance story. The scene is laid in England at the beginning of the 19th century. The plot of the book is interesting. The characters are well drawn.

The book tells us about a poor orphan[ ˈɔː.fən ] сирота Jane Eyre. She got her first job at Thornfield Hall as a governess. She fell in love with her employer Edward Rochester. They both suffered from many hardships, but at the end of the story they got married.

There are some sad episodes in the book. I could not help feeling sad when I read how Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester parted and the girl led a poor difficult life.

On the whole, the book is worth reading. If you like historical novels and romances I advise you to read it.

What famous libraries you know

Early libraries were used only by scientists and were few. The 19th century saw the appearance of system of public libraries. Now most countries have their own national libraries. Many old university libraries have rich collections of books: Oxford and Cambridge in England, Harvard and Yale in the United States. Among the great libraries of the world we can name the British Museam Library in London, the Library of Congress in the United States, Bibliotheque Nationale in France, the Beijing Library in China, the state Public Library in Moscow. The world’s lagerst is the US Library of Congress. It holds about 90 million items - books and manuscripts. The library was founded in 1800 in Washington, DC for the use of Congress and later became a public library. The State Public Library in Moscow was founded in 1862 and has unique collections of books.

Modern libraries do their best to help get information as quickly as possible. They use computers and electronic catalogues. Probably the most difficult problem for any library is to keep their books, journals and films.

E-books or Paper books?

Material

E-books have a great number of different functions: you can store a huge number of books in a small space, change fonts, size of the letters and do other things. Most of these new devices have access to the Internet and electronic libraries, giving you the chance to download almost any book and save money.

They're much more environmentally friendly than paper books. People don't have to cut down many trees for each book.

However, reading paper books has a special magic: some people feel a strange sense of pleasure while flipping pages and holding a hard cover. Printed books don't need any batteries but the electronic books have to be charged. Paper books are not as fragile as electronic devices. If you drop your e- reader, it can be broken.
