What is the purpose and aim of today's session?
The purpose of today's session is to provide you with skills you can practice and develop to support your studying.
The aim of today's session is for you to apply these skills on a weekly basis.
We want you to leave at the end of today's session with a clearer understanding of what studying is and why it is important to your learning.

Competition!
I should’ve said at the start…
There is going to be a competition between each table to guess exactly how many times the word ‘study’ appears on this presentation - only if they appear on my slides. This includes within ’study’ing, etc.
We are already 7 slides in…
'Study' vs 'Revision'
Studying is developing understanding and extension of what you have learned. It is an ongoing process – the more often you do it, the more information you will retain and be able to apply.
Less 'revision' will be required as a result of this - more time can be spent applying skills to exam style questions.
'Study' vs 'Revision'
Revision is looking back over this deeper level of understanding and extension – normally done after learning has finished.
Definition - "reread work done previously to improve one's knowledge of a subject, typically to prepare for an examination."

Working Memory vs Long Term Memory
Long Term Memory
Working Memory
Working memory is an example of short term memory that will remember information for the length of time to complete a task.
Information is only stored temporarily.
Through the process of association and rehearsal, the content of short term memory can become long-term.
Impacted by the way the memory was encoded and how often you access that memory.

Study Environment
Study Space
Area
Where will you not be interrupted?
Avoid sitting on the couch/on your bed if you can – make it separate from places you relax
Lighting - as much as possible, try and get lots of natural light. This is going to become more difficult as it gets dark earlier - avoid any direct unnatural light in your eyeline
Study Space
Time
When will you not be interrupted? Is it when your little brother is out at karate? Before parents get home from work?
How long will you study for? - you need to break this down into short periods which we will discuss later
Study Space
Organisation
What do you need at that time?
What don’t you need?! - minimise distractions
Folder for each subject?
Study Space
On your table there is a plastic pocket full of supplies. One person empty everything onto the middle of the table – messier the better!
Study Space
Now organise it.
Red Card - during tasks if you need support at any point then raise it.
Study Space
Now organise it again.
Who needs what? How are you going to share resources? Where are you storing these? What do you not need at the moment?
Red Card - during tasks if you need support at any point then raise it.
Studying
Studying
The next step is to condense these notes.

Brain Dump
Before looking at Study Techniques, after condensing your notes and before any study session you should perform a 'brain dump'.
This involves writing down everything you know about the topic you are about to study.
After this, you then compare your sheet to your condensed notes.
Anything you missed in your brain dump are gaps in your knowledge - this should be the main focus of your study session!
Studying
After you perform your 'brain dump', what you do now is important...

Learning and Retention
One way we can improve this is through Spaced Repetition:

Mind Maps vs Concept Maps
Mind Maps vs Concept Maps
Mind maps consist of a central image from which multiple, colour-coded arms extend featuring labels with additional, related notes and information.
They are a great way to help summarise your notes.
Mind maps can also be used to organise your knowledge after your 'brain dump'.
Mind Maps vs Concept Maps
Mind Maps vs Concept Maps
I am going to put the image up again and I want you to spend 2 minutes on a sheet of A4 paper creating a mind map.
First step: can you divide the words into obvious categories?

Concept maps allow you to make connections between areaswithin the course.
What links or relationships can you create from your notes?
Concept mapping will force you to make links between learning and will therefore develop your understanding.

SMART Targets
Dual Coding
The previous video has already introduced dual coding.
Dual coding is combining words and visuals such as pictures, diagrams, graphic organisers, and so on.
The idea is to provide two different representations of the information, both visual and verbal, to help you understand the information better.

Task:

Flash Cards
Flashcards are small note cards used for testing and improving memory through practiced information retrieval.
Flashcards are typically two-sided, with the prompt on one side and the information about the prompt on the other. This may include names, translations, examples, or definitions.
For example, one side of the card may say, “Poisson Rouge”, and the other side, “Goldfish”. Usually there are several flashcards that, as a group, represent a category of information you’re trying to remember, learn, and master.

Your peers highlighted Flash Cards as the most effective method they use to study.
Flash Cards
The great thing about flash cards is that they can be combined with other study techniques we have already discussed:
- Mnemonics
- Dual Coding

Can you combine mnemonics or dual coding with flashcards?
Can you create 2 of these based on anything you like?
