How we got started…

  • Capstone opportunity for our 4th and 5th graders
  • Transition from Student Council to Character Council in 2019-20 school year
  • Started with 37 students (meetings at 8:00 am)
  • 2021-22 school year we have 66 students!! (meetings during the day 2x per month). This was a huge increase and celebration as we wanted our council to be an equitable opportunity for all students.

How do we help others?

  • We show appreciation to others (Paras, Custodians, Bus Drivers, etc.)
  • We are leaders in character:
    • Personally by being a member
    • Spirit Days (listen to student voice)
    • School wide character assemblies
    • Service Projects (Heifer International, Refugee Fundraisers, Giving Tree, Coco’s Rescue, Thank you notes, neighborhood leaf rake, and other activities)

Character Reflection

The students reflect on the service projects throughout the year. They expand their hearts as they develop an awareness of the needs in our very own community and world.

“I learned that everybody matters.”

“Helping others can be super fun!”

“Even a small gift can change a life.”

Character first at RFSD

  • Character Education is one of our district priorities.
  • We hope to have more in-person service projects in the future. Many of our activities were fundraiser based during the pandemic.
  • Our staff believes the council is an important part of our building culture and helps set character education as a priority for our school.
